Music Lessons Application Spring 2023
Due to Covid precautions mandated by Yale University, in-person lessons will only be available for fully vaccinated and boosted students and teachers, and masks must be worn during lessons.
For students wishing to receive lessons at the Yale School of Music.
The Yale School of Music offers music lessons to students in Yale College, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and the graduate professional schools. Instruction is available in: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, harp, harpsichord, piano, organ, guitar, voice, violin, viola, cello, and double bass.
Lessons are based on teacher availability. Students must have access to their own instruments. YSM does not provide instruments for lessons.
Undergraduate Credit Lessons
Pending the results of online auditions, YSM will grant credit lessons to select students. Students may be required to play a final jury each semester and receive a narrative final grade report along with a P or F grade. There is no additional charge for the lessons; students enrolled for credit are also required to enroll in certain music theory and musicianship courses from Groups 1,3, or 4 of the course offerings from the Department of Music. These courses may be taken prior to or concurrently with credit music lessons.
If a student is accepted for Credit Lessons they must immediately register for the proper lessons course and any music theory co-requisite. Most returning students do not need to re-audition unless required by their professor.
Please check the Department of Music Website for information and updates:

Undergraduate Non-credit Lessons
Students not wishing to take lessons for credit may pay a fee ($350 for 6 one-hour lessons in a semester, or $550 for 10 one-hour lessons). Undergraduate students who demonstrate musical potential and financial need are eligible for a scholarship from the Cynthia Redding White Dixon Memorial Fund. For information about applying for the scholarships please contact Kristine Kinsella, (kristine.kinsella@yale.edu).
Graduate Secondary/Non-credit Lessons
YSM students enrolled in secondary lessons can receive instruction in either voice or piano. In addition, YSM keyboard majors may take secondary organ or harpsichord, and YSM violinists may take secondary viola. Any other students who wish to take secondary lessons in any other instruments must petition the director of secondary lessons no later than August 30, 2022 for the fall term and January 14, 2023 for the spring term. Students who are not conducting majors may take only one secondary instrument per term. Please see the YSM Bulletin for specific course requirements.
Students enrolled in the Yale Divinity School, Yale School of Art, and the Yale School of Drama can apply for Secondary Lessons for Credit for a fee of $200 per semester.
Students from all other Yale Graduate and Professional Schools can take non-credit lessons ($350 for 6 one-hour lessons and $550 for 10 one-hour lessons).
Please check the Yale School of Music website for updates:
