City Council to Receive Parks Comp Plan

During its regular meeting next Tuesday, February 15th, the Yakima City Council is scheduled to receive Yakima Parks and Recreation’s 2022-2027 Comprehensive Master Plan. The plan, a draft, will be presented during a public hearing at 6:00 pm on February 15th.

The draft document is available online at 2022-2027 Comprehensive Master Plan | Yakima Parks and Recreation

“The comprehensive plan helps us determine how best to use our resources to provide the kinds of facilities and programs that the community wants most,” said Parks and Recreation Manager Ken Wilkinson.

A key element that guided the plan’s design was a community survey Parks and Recreation conducted last summer in English and Spanish.

“The survey was an excellent way to gather feedback,” said Wilkinson. “That information was absolutely invaluable to us as we make decisions that affect how we spend taxpayer dollars.”

The survey was required in conjunction with the Yakima Parks and Recreation Comprehensive Master Plan in order for the City to be eligible for grant funds through the Washington State Recreation & Conservation Office.

The 2022-2027 Comprehensive Master Plan includes results from last year’s survey. For example:

  • In response to a survey question about additional recreation programs they would like to see offered or expanded; the most popular response was concerts in the parks, followed by movies in the parks.
  • More than two-thirds of respondents said City of Yakima Parks and Recreations facilities are extremely or very important to their families.
