STATESBORO, Ga. (WTOC) - Georgia Southern University Police continue to investigate a shooting that reportedly occurred on Sept. 15 at approximately at 9:30 p.m. near Kennedy Hall on the Statesboro campus.

According to police, no one known to be involved in the incident is affiliated with Georgia Southern.

Police say information from the investigation indicates the shooting was a result of an accident off-campus at the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Lanier Drive that led to a road rage incident.

In an attempt to get away from the assailant’s pursuit, the victim turned his car onto a road that led him onto campus where he was followed by the assailant. The assailant then fired shots at the victim’s car near Kennedy Hall, according to police.

The assailant then drove away from campus. The victim suffered minor injuries during the incident but was not directly hit by gunfire.

University leaders say open roads around campus bring traffic, but very rarely random trouble like this.

“Georgia Southern’s Statesboro campus roadways connect to roadways in and out of the community. As we’re not a gated campus, there is access,” university spokesperson Jennifer Wise said.

Anyone with information on the accident or road rage incident is asked to call Sgt. Danny Garrigus at University Police at 912-478-5234.
