No tuition increase for most University System of Georgia students, fee also going away

The University System of Georgia’s Board of Regents voted to eliminate the “special institutional fee” that has been in effect since 2009.

The board also voted to not raise tuition for all but one school.

The special institutional fee was added during the “Great Recession.” The fee added a flat $170 to $544 per semester for all students, regardless of the number of classes taken.

“The university system’s longstanding commitment to affordability helps empower students, keeping them on track to learn the skills they need to get good jobs in a highly skilled workforce,” USG Chancellor Sonny Perdue said in a news release.

Tuition will remain the same in 25 of 26 state institutions for the third year in a row. The only exception is Middle Georgia State University, where it will increase from $17 to $64 per credit hour.

“Affordability is one of the board’s highest priorities as our institutions work to increase degree attainment and maintain Georgia’s ranking as one of the best public university systems in the nation,” Board Chairman Harold Reynolds said.
