AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - We know the job market is a huge stressor these days. But one sector in-need of millions of workers is cybersecurity. That’s why the Georgia Cyber Center is launching a new program to train and connect people with good jobs.

“A couple years ago I was living in Nashville homeless,” said Matt Weber, a trainee.

Matt Weber’s life has been a journey. He’s a military veteran looking for his next step.

“I just needed something to progress in life with and get into something that I’ve always had a hidden interest in,” he said.

It took a suggestion from Forces United, but he’s now in the Georgia Cyber Center’s Workforce Program. To be trained and earn certification in cyber all for free.

“I couldn’t be more thankful,” he said.

He’s one of dozens now getting cyber training.

An $8 million grant from the Department of Labor helped start the effort. Offering it at no cost for veterans, military spouses, or transitioning service members. Others can join too.

“The grant specifically speaks to those who are underemployed or unemployed. We are trying to equip them with skills that can fill the entry-level positions,” said Nicole Cliff, Cyber Devops Engineer.

Nicole Cliff is the interim director of training for the program. She says it’s a win-win for the cyber community.

“We will marry them to an apprenticeship program aligned with an employer. The employer has the opportunity to receive wage reimbursement,” she said.

There are more cyber jobs available than there are students graduating. It’s a way to fill the pipeline.

“It impacts economic growth, and it’s our give back from the Georgia Cyber Center,” she said.

And for Matt Weber, it’s the gift of a second chance.

“There are things in life that I want later on, and this opportunity is going to allow me to take care of those things and have those things in life,” he said.

If you are interested in the program you can reach out to the Georgia Cyber Center. They expect to train dozens in the coming months.
