Monkeypox cases are on the rise in South Florida, and state health officials don't see the outbreak slowing any time soon.Now, Florida has nearly 10% of all cases in the United States.The Florida Department of Health leaders said the monkeypox virus has been spreading in Florida over the last two months and now the highest concentration of the virus is in Broward County.Right now, there are 208 confirmed and probable cases in Florida. Palm Beach County is the only county in our area with these cases. Neighboring Broward County has 110 cases and there are 56 cases in Miami-Dade County. Health leaders think these case numbers will only continue to rise as the virus spreads from one person to another. Right now, the state has secured 25,000 doses of the two-dose monkeypox vaccine, which is available for people at high risk of infection. Tests are available at commercial labs.Fauci: Monkeypox should be taken more seriously"In terms of increase spread we are continuing since mid-May," said Dr. Ulyee Choe, director of the Florida Department of Health in Pinellas County. "We have seen an increase really throughout the country and throughout the world and so it is likely we will continue to see more and more cases and again as I mentioned with a lot of the commercial testing that is now available, I suspect even more so we will be catching more cases as well.The Florida Department of Health is working to secure more doses of the monkeypox vaccine from the federal government and the hardest hit areas, like Broward County, are receiving the most doses as of now.Your health: Here’s what you need to knowAnyone who has a suspicious rash or comes in contact with someone positive for monkeypox should contact their local health department.
