AUGUSTA (WJBF) – Ed Tarver, who represented the Augusta area in the Georgia State Senate and served as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia, died Friday at the age of 64 according to family members.

Tarver was born in 1959 and graduated from Augusta College before enlisting in the Army. He earned his law degree from the University of Georgia in 1991.

From 2005-2009 Tarver represented Georgia’s 22nd District in the Georgia State Senate. Later in 2009, he was sworn in as the first Black United States Attorney from the Southern District of Georgia.

In 2020, he ran unsuccessfully as a Democrat for one of Georgia’s seats in the U.S. Senate that was eventually won by Sen. Raphael Warnock.

He was a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated Alpha Mu Boule of the Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated. 

He is survived by his wife, Dr. Carole Dale Tarver, and his children.  

According to Enoch Tarver, P.C., Tarver died on Friday morning from complications following surgery in December.
