Biography

Lucretia Senter was born on the 23rd of February, 1779 in New Hampshire, United States. [1] (She was almost certainly born in Strafford County, most likely New Hampton. See comments in Summary section below).

Her parents are thought to be David Senter and Susan Chamberlain. Although, this remains unconfirmed with no known sources (as of 27 May 2023). [2]

Lucretia married William Dyer Weeks on the 3rd of November, 1799 in Danville, Caledonia, Vermont, United States. The registration of the marriage shows William's residence as Peacham, Vermont and Lucretia was from Danville, Vermont.[3] [4]

Children;

  • Elizabeth Weeks b. 1800 m. William Ladd
  • Susannah "Susan" Weeks b. 1803 m. John F. Christie
  • Emeline Weeks b. 1804 m. George Hunter
  • Dyer Weeks b. 1806 m. Lucy Hewitt Weeks
  • Philander J. Weeks b. 1808 m. Harriet Tubbs
  • William Weeks b. 1808 m. Lovina Taylor

Lucretia and William settled in Peacham, Vermont. On the 1800 U.S. Census the William D. (transcribed as J) Weeks household contains one male aged 10-16 (identity unknown) and one male aged 26-45 (William b. 1769 ). There is also one female aged 0-10 (Elizabeth Weeks Ladd b. 1800) and one female aged 16-26 (Lucretia b. 1779)[5]

Lucretia died on the 7th of December, 1871 in Westfield, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. She is buried in the Champlin Cemetery in Westfield, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, United States.[6]

Research Notes

Parentage

  • No source has been found to confirm Lucretia's birth or the connection to David Senter and Susee "Susan" Chamberlain as her parents.

The available sources for the children of David Senter and Susan Chamberlain don't mention a child named Lucretia b. abt. 1779. No birth registration has been found. In Census documents Lucretia consistently says she was born in New Hampshire. Lucretia marries William Dyer Weeks.

  • Her marriage record shows her residence at that time (of marriage) to be Danville, Vermont. This makes sense, as David Senter (her alleged father) owned land in Danville, VT by this time (purchased on 17 April 1794). Her husband, William Weaks (Weekes) was residing in Peacham at that time.
  • To look into - Was one of David's brother's her father, and she was later taken in by her uncle David and aunt Susan? Davids brothers - Joseph Senter II or Jr. (1752 MA – 1832 NY), Noah Johnson Senter (1756 MA – 1818 MA), Ebenezer Senter (1757 ? – 1813 NH), Edward Senter (1760 MA – 1829 NH).

A pre-internet source has been found that states David and Susan (Chamberlain) Senter are Lucretia's parents. There was a genealogical periodical called "The Second Boat" that was in print from 1980 to 1997. It was edited by Rosemary E. Bachelor, Mary H. Dormer, & Melinda. M. Langdon of Machias, Maine. Two editions mention Lucretia Senter within the "Genealogical Queries" section. With both instances, her mention is stated as fact as a part of a query for information about William Dyer Weeks parents. Both were made by James C Babbitt of Glen Aubrey, New York.

From The Second Boat - v.5, no. 2 (Aug 1984):

SENTER - JOHNSON Rev. Col. Joseph Senter of Plymouth, NH, b. 2 Mar. 1722; d. 14 May 1798; m. Elizabeth Johnson, prob. dau. of Noah Johnson. Seek parents, anc. of Elizabeth, poss. traced to Woburn, MA. WEEKS/WEAKS/WICKES - SENTER - CHAMBERLAIN Need parents, anc. of William Dyer Weeks/Weaks/Wickes, poss. of Danville, VT, b. 18 July 1769; d. 27 Mar. 1850; m. Lucretia Senter b. 23 Feb. 1779; d. 7 Dec. 1871; dau. of David & Susan (Chamberlain) Senter.

From The Second Boat - v.6, no. 2 (Aug 1985):

WEEKS - SENTER Want parents, anc. of William Dyer Weeks b. 18 July 1769; d. 27 Mar. 1850, of Danville, VT; m. 3 Nov. 1799, Lucretia Senter b. 23 Feb. 1779; d. 7 Dec. 1871, of Plymouth, NH.

So here we have a Mr. James C Babbitt stating, prior to the public internet, that Lucretia is the daughter of David & Susan Senter, and that she was "of Plymouth" New Hampshire.

Summary (with David Senter as her father):

Birth – Feb 23, 1779 – Probably New Hampton, Strafford County, New Hampshire.

Another possibility is Moultonborough. This is based on David Senter's land records of the time. On 3 Jul 1777, David sold 60 acres of land in Moultonborough to Enoch Catessold. [7] Then, on 04 Jan 1781, David sold 200 acres of land in New Hampton to Ezekiel Morse. [8]. On 20 Jan 1781, David (of New Hampton) purchased many acres in Plymouth from Thomas Lucas.[9]

It's therefore likely that since Lucretia was born in 1779, she was born in New Hampton, Strafford, New Hampshire.

Circa Sep 17, 1781 – Feb 27, 1793 – Plymouth New Hampshire (fathers land records)

Circa Apr 17, 1794 – Nov 3, 1799 - Danville Vermont (fathers land records) Nov 3, 1799 - 1821, Feb – Danville/ Clarendon Vermont (Marriage, Census of Husband)

In my Senter family file I have her parents as Isaac Senter and Sarah/Sally Ball.
Hi Ellen,

Interesting. I'm assuming this Isaac Senter is not David Senter's (1747-1819) brother, because it looks like he was born sometime around 1770, Isaac Senter (abt.1770-abt.1834). Too young (9 years old) to be Lucretia's father.

Your Isaac Senter, do you know who his paternal grandfather was?

While Plymouth remains a possibility (if Lucretia was born at her alleged grandfather, Col. Joseph Senter's house in Plymouth), she was probably born in New Hampton, Strafford County, New Hampshire.

So, David and Susanna Senter probably moved from Moultonborough to New Hampton sometime around 3 Jul 1777 based on that land sale.

Then, sometime around 4 Jan 1781 (after Lucretia was already born), the family moved from New Hampton to Plymouth where we find a land purchase by David Senter on 20 January 1781.

So the theory of where Lucretia Senter was born is now Plymouth, New Hampshire. The reason for that is this...

Facts:

1. The Second boat periodical (Aug 1985) states: "Lucretia Senter b. 23 Feb. 1779; d. 7 Dec. 1871, of Plymouth, NH."

2. Lucretia's maternal grandmother, Lucretia Rogers, died in 1772.

3. Per the Plymouth N.H. town clerk, the record keeper from 1763-1835 only noted the births of children born of marriages performed in Plymouth (David and Susan were married in Middlesex Co., MA).

Theory:

Because Susan Senter (Chamberlain)'s mother was dead years before 1779, Susan Senter went to her mother-in-law's house to give birth to her first child...Lucretia Senter, on 23 Feb. 1779. Perhaps David took her to his parent's place in Plymouth when she was close to giving birth. Col. Senter's house in Plymouth might have been considered a safer place for Susan to give birth, as this was in the middle of the Revolutionary war.

Col. Joseph Senter was living in Plymouth by 1778 and was a prominent citizen of that town until about 1794 (state legislature, selectman, justice of the peace, special justice of the superior court of judicature, etc).

So, if Lucretia Senter really was born in Plymouth N.H. on Feb 23, 1779, amazingly, the town clerk intentionally did not record the birth as a matter of (some) process they followed.

This would explain why it's been difficult to find a birth record for Lucretia and why an early author like William Richard Cutter might have missed noting Lucretia as a child of David and Susan's...because he (or others assisting him) couldn't find a birth record with any of the area town clerks.

[Edit: Add to theory piece about Revolutionary war period.]

Col. Joseph Seater of Plymouth, NH, b. 2 Mar. 1722; d. 14 May 1798; m. Elizabeth Johnson, prob. dau. of Noah Johnson. Seek parents, anc. of Elizabeth, poss. traced to Woburn, MA. WEEKS/WEAKS/WICKES - SENTER - CHAMBERLAIN Need parents, anc. of William Dyer Weeks/Weaks/Wickes, poss. of Danville, VT, b. 18 July 1769; d. 27 Mar. 1850; m. Lucretia Senter b. 23 Feb. 1779; d. 7 Dec. 1871; dau. of David & Susan (Chamberlain) Senter.

From the The Second Boat - v.6, no.

To follow-up - Mr. James C Babbit appears to have died in 1988 https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/40507221/james-charlton-babbitt Did he leave behind any source documentation regarding Lucretia Senter?

Does anyone have a source for who Lucretia Senter (Weeks) parents were?

Allegedly, they are David Senter and Susannah (Chamberlain) Senter.

However, there doesn't seem to be any source for this information other than family tree's that themselves don't have a linked source.
