AMERICUS, Ga. (WALB) - For three consecutive years, Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) has been named the “Best Place to Work” in the Americus Times-Recorder’s Best of Sumter 2023 Readers’ Choice Awards after being voted on by the community.

“We take immense pride in the culture fostered here at Georgia Southwestern,” said GSW President Neal Weaver, Ph.D. “Our most valuable asset is undoubtedly our people. They work hard every day to ensure each person has an exceptional campus experience. If you ask anyone what makes GSW special, the resounding response is our welcoming atmosphere, strong sense of community, and friendly environment - attributes directly shaped by the individuals at GSW.”

GSW employs approximately 375 full-time and part-time faculty and staff and sits as one of the largest employers in Americus. The university system only falls behind the Sumter County School System, Phoebe Sumter Medical Center and Magnolia Manor.

According to the university, there are a multitude of perks that come with being part of the GSW family. These perks range from a comprehensive benefits package to various retirement options.

GSW prioritizes employees’ health, well-being and development through initiatives like the tuition assistance program, paid time off, and well-being release time.

Employees also receive complimentary access to the recreation center, free entry to home athletic games, and exclusive discounts at the GSW Bookstore and popular Georgia attractions through Team Georgia.

GSW welcomes individuals in a full circle with graduates returning to work at their alma mater.

Long-time employee Gaye Hayes, assistant vice president of enrollment management, has been employed at GSW for 32 years.

After completing her undergraduate at GSW and earning her master’s at the University of Georgia, Hayes returned to GSW where she has made a lasting impact through unwavering commitment and expertise.

“I appreciate the opportunities for learning and professional growth that GSW provides,” Hayes said. “I am also grateful for the support of my fellow co-workers as we strive to let students know GSW is a great option for higher education.”

This employee satisfaction is what keeps the school being voted for “Best Place to Work.”
