Internship - Rotating – Small Animal

Small Animal Rotating Internship

Avets

A flexible rotating internship which offers each intern the opportunity to build the program that best meets their own interest and needs. Avets offers an environment where interns can develop their skills as doctors through hands-on learning along side a team of mentors who are passionate about teaching. In addition to case-based learning, didactic rounds, and flexibility in rotation schedules, we also offer our interns primary surgical experiences. Our program builds the medicine, team work, and doctoring skills required to become excellent, well rounded doctors equipped to handle emergency medicine, primary care, or to pursue specialty medicine.

Additional Information about this Program
While all interns will rotate through ER and Specialty Services, we offer flexibility to each candidate to tailor their internship to meet their interests and needs.  So what does this mean for you? If you start your internship and decide that you'd like to focus on ER medicine, we'll can discuss conversion to our ER Immerse mentorship program that includes 6 months of mentorship and training, and then be transitioned to a full ER clinician salary and begin seeing caseload as a staff ER doctor.  Alternatively, if you fall in love with Exotic Pet medicine and would like to expand your experience with that service or another specialty, we can discuss transitioning to a hybrid Small Animal and Exotics internship or other specialty focused internship.  This gives you the option to flex your training based on your preferences, and provides additional time for you to understand what you're most interested in.  Avets has a successful history of mentoring non-traditional candidates with unique interests and career goals, and we are committed to graduating individuals who thrive as doctors, employees and leaders.  We understand that a cookie-cutter approach may not be the best way to achieve this.  In addition to providing flexibility with the composition of the internship program, we can also discuss flexible start dates to align with the candidates needs.  Clinical Rotations /Experiential Training   Each intern will rotate through the following specialties: Internal Medicine, Surgery, Neurology/Neurosurgery, Oncology, and Avian and Exotics rotation. Interns also rotate through daytime ICU (inpatient care) and Emergency services (outpatient receiving).  A Criticalist or experienced ER doctor directly supports and mentors interns while on the emergency service. Interns also have 24/7 access to phone consultation with Criticalists to assist in patient care as needed.  Additionally, we pride ourselves in providing our interns with hands-on experience with common emergency surgical procedures, and strive for all interns graduating from our program to be competent in basic emergency procedures and surgeries.      Each intern is scheduled for two weeks of electives (out of hospital rotation), and those rotations can be completed at a hospital of their choice.  As part of the Ethos family of hospitals, Avets can provide a well-rounded experience with contacts in specialties services not currently offered at our facility, all while still being small enough for an intern to be an important part of the team.  In the past, interns have chosen rotations at busy general practices, with our local rescue organization, to attend continuing education seminars, or with hospitals for experience in specialties not currently offered at Avets.    Didactic Education   At the commencement of the internship, all Interns go through an orientation consisting of didactic lectures, wet-labs, and shadowing the team. During the year Interns participate rounds conducted by the clinicians. This will include lectures from specialists as well as intern-led grand-rounds presentations. Interns have opportunities to develop an in-house research project to be formally presented at the end of the internship year or to prepare a manuscript suitable for publication if their future goals include residency training or career in research.  Avets & Pittsburgh Avets is located in a brand new 20,000 sq ft state-of-the-art facility equipped with an ICU, four surgical suites, two isolation units, and quality medical equipment.  Our team works closely together to provide the best care to our community, and to foster a culture of teaching and learning. In addition to direct contact to several mentors, doctors, and specialists, we also provide a comprehensive training program for our support staff led by two critical care veterinary technician specialists.  Avets is located about 20 minutes outside of Pittsburgh, in a suburban area that is perfectly located between the city and country life.  Interns have been able to find affordable housing in the environment of their choosing.  Pittsburgh is proud to rank among the best places to work, live, and visit in the United States.  There are ample opportunities for foodies, nature lovers, and culture enthusiasts.  Check out visitpittsburgh.com for more information.
