Additional Information about this Program
Virginia Veterinary Centers (VVC) is a network of three emergency and specialty hospitals located in Richmond, Fredericksburg, and Midlothian, Virginia. The internship program is specifically located at our flagship Richmond hospital which has been serving the needs of the surrounding community for over 40 years. Virginia Veterinary Centers - Richmond houses a 24 hour Emergency room and an ever-expanding variety of specialty services including critical care, surgery, internal medicine, oncology, dermatology, dentistry, ophthalmology, anesthesia, radiology / advanced imaging, and urgent care. With the opening of our new larger building (slated for 2024) we will be adding neurology (currently housed separately) and radiation oncology to our team. VVC interns are scheduled to split their training time between emergency / urgent care and rotation through various specialties. All interns will be matched with a mentor of their choosing to help guide them through the program but will receive feedback and instruction from numerous specialists and emergency clinicians. Interns will have dedicated didactic training starting with a 12-week lecture series and expanding throughout the year to include journal club, morbidity and mortality rounds, skills laboratories, and culminating with a one-hour seminar on a topic of the candidate's choosing. All specialty doctors participate in patient rounds, didactic lectures and labs throughout the year. Learning is not confined to the classroom, however; interns will be given individualized, practical instruction on case management and procedures on the clinic floor throughout the program. No on-call shifts are required but interested interns can also pursue additional training and experience with after-hours surgeries or specialty procedures. Interns will have direct and indirect supervision throughout the program and need not fear being thrown to the proverbial overnight wolves unassisted. We are looking for enthusiastic, self-motivated, and collegial applicants that match our hospital's core values and vision. At VVC we believe in the importance of nurturing curious, compassionate, and competent clinicians whether your goals are residency, primary care, or emergency medicine. We value work-life balance and strive to ensure our trainees can be people first and interns second. All efforts will be made to ensure at least one free weekend per month for each trainee. VVC’s referral and client base is large, providing services to the greater Richmond community and surrounding areas up to 150 miles away. Richmond itself is a vibrant and growing city, with a culture of creativity and diversity, situated against the beautiful James River. It’s a great city that offers endless food options as well as countless breweries, cideries, and wineries. Festivals and river-sports abound in the summer and there are always museums, musicals, concerts, or craft fairs to be found year-round. Richmond is a short drive from the beach or the Blue Ridge mountains and the city allows for urban, exurban, suburban, or rural living all within easy driving distance of the hospital. Richmond truly offers something for everyone. Virginia Veterinary Centers is an Ethos hospital. Ethos is a veterinary health organization with hospitals across the U.S. providing advanced medical care for pets. Our approach focuses on innovation, team development and collaboration.
