Rotating General Internship

LIVS is home to the Canine Chiari Institute and hosts many specialty services including Emergency and Critical Care, Surgery, Internal Medicine, Ophthalmology, Neurology, Dermatology, Oncology, Rehabilitation, Integrative Medicine and Cardiology. Our hospital features a full-service rehabilitation center that is run by certified canine rehabilitation practitioners. Modalities include water and land treadmills, cold laser therapy, electrical stimulation, and ultrasound. Interns will play a crucial role in all aspects of the clinical setting. Rotations in each specialty will involve close interaction with and supervision by the staff specialists and/or residents. Long Island Veterinary Specialists’ large and diverse caseload, which includes dogs, cats, birds, ferrets, rabbits, rodents, reptiles, and pot-bellied pigs will provide progressive medical and surgical clinical skills. A rotating schedule includes all specialty services as well as emergency services. Intern duties include primary care for emergency cases, evaluation, and formulation of plans for hospitalized cases, and assisting specialists with procedures and communications as they rotate though each service. Didactic training includes daily service rounds, weekly journal review, and monthly lectures for continuing education credit for staff and local referral veterinarians. LIVS has earned a reputation for providing the highest level of emergency and critical care for pets in the region. We provide direct supervision on emergency cases by experienced emergency clinicians and 24-hour on-call, board certified critical care consultations. Additionally, specialists and hospitalists are on staff to further augment your training and ensure the highest patient care standards. Interns at LIVS will have a 5-day work week, with 2 days off per week. Additionally, you have no on-call time when you are off schedule. This structure creates an outstanding learning experience, preserves work-life balance, and provides the highest level of care to our patients. LIVS currently has 4 surgical residents, 1 surgical intern, 1 exotic resident, and one ophthalmology intern. It has been a recognized center for research since its inception in 1998. Our staff have authored over 128 manuscripts, 56 textbook chapters and 4 textbooks and have been invited speakers nationally and internationally. We maintain dozens of research studies and work collaboratively with local human medical centers, as well as the College of Veterinary Medicine at Long Island University, where we serve as the primary veterinary teaching hospital. Interns are encouraged to participate in any of the ongoing clinical studies already underway and can be mentored by our Director of Research. 4 ultrasound machines; 2 digital radiology suites, fluoroscopy, videoscopy instrumentation for endoscopy, bronchoscopy, tracheoscopy, otoscopy, and rhinoscopy; on-site 64 slice CT scanner, electrodiagnostic (EMG, ERG, BAER), radioiodine therapy suite, brachytherapy, 3 Tesla MRI, medical infrared imaging, force plate/gait analysis, in-house laboratory testing including coagulation tests and arterial blood gas; and a critical care/non-anesthetic ventilator. Our ophthalmology suite is equipped with diode ophthalmic laser, intraocular ultrasonography, operating surgical microscope and two phacoemulsification cataract units. Our surgical suites are equipped with a cavitron ultrasonic aspirator (CUSA), arthroscopic and laparoscopy equipment, surgical ultrasonography, full bone-plating equipment, Brainsight system for brain tumor removal, tracheal and urethral stents, and cemented/cementless total hip implants.
