Small Animal Medicine and Surgery Rotating Internship

SAGE San Francisco is located at the center of the five Bay Area SAGE Emergency and Specialty hospitals including locations in Redwood City, Campbell, Dublin, and Concord California. SAGE, now part of Ethos, has long been recognized for unparalleled quality in veterinary medicine. Our newest location, San Francisco, is excited to launch the first rotating internship at SAGE. We are a close-knit team of emergency doctors, specialists, technicians, and support staff on a mission to provide the best veterinary medicine to the pets and people of our incredible city. We are all excited to collaborate, educate, and learn alongside the 2024 class of rotating interns. Our state-of-the-art facility is one of only two 24/7/365 emergency hospitals in San Francisco. We have dedicated emergency and critical care teams, two in-house laboratories, digital x-ray, three surgery suites, the Bay Area’s only cardiac catheterization surgery suite with a robust minimally-invasive cardiovascular procedures caseload (pacemaker, PDA, pulmonary artery stenting, and balloon valvuloplasty), laparoscopy/thoracoscopy MIS capabilities, a 16-slice CT, 1.5T MRI, C-arm fluoroscopy, endoscopy, a dedicated chemotherapy suite, electrochemotherapy, and an animal ambulance. For those interested in specialties not currently covered at our facility, we have the benefit of 4 other sister-locations within an easily accessible radius to provide these additional training opportunities as elective out-rotations. No satellite hospital services are required.Our goals for the program center around helping our Interns become the most well-rounded clinicians by providing: primary case responsibility, strong mentorship from senior clinicians, a wide variety of resources for didactic as well as in-hospital learning, and ensure essential core competencies are accessible throughout the training period. We encourage our Interns to be deeply involved in each rotation, including blocks working within each of our Specialties and Emergency department. In doing so, we hope to provide a solid foundation on which to foster greater confidence in case management and develop crucial problem-solving skills. Throughout the year, supervision and guidance will always be available, even on overnight shifts. While we provide a support system we also value growth, and each Intern is encouraged to develop independence along every step of patient care. We believe teamwork allows for the best care practices for our patients and have built a strong culture to instill and reinforce these core values. Being a member of the larger Ethos community provides us access to an expansive number of resources (online modular training, teaching videos, journal subscriptions, topic rounds, access to specialists who may be located off site, etc). Additionally, clinician-led in-hospital learning is provided through CE lectures, regular rounds and chapter reviews, and emphasis on critical hands-on learning is built into the program.Lastly, the San Francisco Bay Area is in the heart of one of the most internationally acclaimed regions in the world, providing everything from a vibrant and diverse food scene, to a multitude of outdoor recreational activities with accessibility to both mountain sports and surf-friendly beaches. The hospital is located in the Mission District, a lively mix of residential, workplace, dining, and retail spaces. Our block features fascinating makers spaces including the world-famous Tartine bakery, and we are within walking distance from the beautiful and eclectic Mission Dolores Park, where residents and their pets amass every weekend to soak up the views and sunshine. We share the community and foster close ties with multiple pet boarding facilities, the city’s busiest primary care and animal shelter practice, a senior dog rescue, and the animal care and control department. Our central location enjoys multiple theater/Broadway performance stages, and historic landmarks like the Golden Gate Bridge and Angel Island. The city is a recreation paradise, featuring easy access to biking, hiking, surfing, and countless other adventures, while the agricultural bounty of the state floods into multiple weekly farmer’s markets and restaurants. We are within driving distance to Lake Tahoe, Yosemite National Park, the Napa/Sonoma wine regions, and the breathtaking California coast, which encompasses the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, spanning hundreds of miles of shoreline and provides some of the most bio-diverse scuba diving opportunities in northern and central California. With three international airports in close proximity to our hospital (SFO, OAK, SJC) our practice is easily accessible for applicants from across the country.
