Additional Information about this Program
We offer specialty care in Diagnostic Imaging, Surgery, Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Ophthalmology, Exotics, Anesthesia, and Critical Care, as well as a busy emergency service and general practice. The hospital is supported by nearby Ethos hospitals with neurology, oncology, a diagnostic laboratory, and a compounding pharmacy. Our hospital team has created a friendly and collaborative environment where all team members work together to produce excellent outcomes in medicine and client service. The goal of our internship is to augment the new graduate's veterinary education with practical and comprehensive training in general practice and emergency medicine. We aim to equip the new graduate with skills in communication, medicine, surgery, critical thinking, and ethical considerations.Key differentiators for our internship are the focus on surgical skills, and the significant amount of time that the intern spends as the primary clinician on clinics. Our internship provides robust training in surgery via participation in the surgery on call system alongside a senior clinician. Our goal is to give interns the training to perform all common emergency and general practice surgical procedures. Interns will also have significant exposure to general practice caseload, routine surgeries, and dentistry. Interns will gain knowledge in treating exotics patients through emergency, general practice, and the exotics specialty service rotations. The hospital is well equipped including ultrasound, digital radiography, digital dental radiography, in-house laboratory as well as access to an in-network clinical pathologist and reference laboratory, endoscopy, arthroscopy, laparoscopy, and a 64 slice Toshiba Aquilion CT scanner. We employ 58 technicians throughout the hospital, not all CVTs. We have an in-house training program for technicians and veterinary assistants. The emergency room is staffed with 3-4 technicians, and there are 3-4 technicians staffed in the ICU per shift. The internship is designed to provide primary case responsibility and hands-on learning for the interns, with exposure to specialty medicine and surgery. Current scheduling provides: 12-20 weeks of emergency/critical care, 12-20 weeks of general practice, 4 weeks of internal medicine, 4 weeks of surgery, 4 weeks of exotic specialty medicine, and 6 weeks of electives (which may be on-site or offsite).Interns will always be scheduled with senior clinicians present and available for assistance. They will have primary case responsibility on general practice and emergency/critical care, and gradually interns will become more independent through the year. On specialty rotations, interns will participate in case discussions and have secondary case responsibility.Inpatient rounds occur twice daily and interns are expected to participate when on services with hospitalized patients. Weekly case rounds and other formal lectures will be provided, and additional didactic training is available at our other Ethos locations. Our interns will be scheduled to work no more than 50 hours per week. Interns will have regularly scheduled on-call evenings to provide surgical experience. There will be two full days off per week, with no case or on call responsibilities. The hospital is located close to Boston as well as Cape Cod, Maine, and New Hampshire. Here you will be able to explore the city, or take advantage of skiing, hiking, and all the other outdoor adventures available nearby.Ethos is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Ethos does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, physical or mental disability, national origin, veteran status, or any other basis covered by appropriate law. All employment is decided on the basis of qualifications, competence, merit, and business need.Employment with Ethos is contingent upon successfully completing a background check and showing proof of eligibility to work in the United States on your first day.Only applicants from AVMA accredited veterinary schools will be considered.Unfortunately, we are NOT able to sponsor VISAs.Non-United States citizens or if you are not an alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence in the United States, MUST contact the Massachusetts Board of Veterinary Medicine (https://www.mass.gov/veterinarian-licensing) to verify your eligibility for receiving a MA license in time for the start of internship.
