Small Animal Surgery Internship

Metropolitan Veterinary Hospital / Metropolitan Veterinary Referral Group

Metropolitan Veterinary Hospital offers five small animal surgical internships for the 2024-2025 match year. A high percentage of our surgical interns have been matched for surgical residencies. We have an open Surgery Residency position yearly, often filled by one of our surgical interns. The program is directed towards individuals with at least one year of post-graduate experience in a rotating internship who desire to enter a surgical residency program after completion. We operate out of a referral hospital (Metropolitan Veterinary Hospital) in Akron, Ohio, and have a second location in the Cleveland Metropolitan Area.

Additional Information about this Program
Metropolitan Veterinary Hospital is offering five small animal surgical internships for the 2024-2025 match year. The surgical internship program has been established at Metropolitan Veterinary Hospital since 2005 and has been continually advancing and improving. We operate from a long-established referral hospital (Metropolitan Veterinary Hospital) in Akron, Ohio. We have recently opened a state-of-the-art and fully equipped second location in the Cleveland Metropolitan Area. The surgery service draws caseloads from a population of 2-3 million and a referral base of several hundred veterinarians. Our original Akron hospital and newly opened state-of-the-art Metro Cleveland East practice boast 28,000+ square feet of space with new and improved diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities. Our facilities provide in-house ultrasound, color flow doppler echocardiography, digital radiography (both standard and dental), digital c-arm fluoroscopy, 64-slice CT scanner, 1.5T MRI, a high definition Vimago with 3-D capability, radioactive iodine therapy, flexible and rigid endoscopy, thermography, invasive and non-invasive critical care monitoring including telemetry, high flow oxygen therapy and mechanical ventilation capabilities. We perform a full and varied range of orthopedic, soft tissue, and oncologic surgeries, including total joint replacements, corrective osteotomies, minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic arthroscopy, laparoscopy, thoracoscopy, interventional radiology, and reconstructive surgeries. Our staff of 4 board-certified ACVS surgeons and two staff surgeons concentrate on subspecialties to elevate our overall level of practice. We directly support four surgical residents and five specialty surgical interns in training and have one of the longest-standing rotating internship programs in the nation. There is a strong collegial atmosphere between the house officers of all specialty medicine departments.Board-certified surgeons directly supervise surgical interns with "one-on-one" teaching from individual specialists on clinical rotation in didactic lectures, journal clubs, and grand rounds. The surgical interns are expected to attend resident-level surgical courses provided continuously throughout the year. A research project or case report publication is strongly recommended and supported. There is NO primary emergency duty. On-call responsibility for support of after-hours surgical emergencies is shared evenly amongst all surgical interns. These cases are pre-screened by ER doctors and the on-call surgical resident. Applicants interested in further information or arranging a visit to the hospital should contact the program administrator (Danielle Wyatt, 330-670-2358 or [email protected]).
