Our one year internship program with core rotations in Internal Medicine, ER receiving, Inpatient care, Surgery, and elective/additional time in Neurology, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Diagnostic Imaging, and Anesthesia. Interns are expected to be highly motivated, committed, team-oriented, energetic individuals who desire to strengthen their education. Strengths of our program include a large amount of one-on-one time with the specialists, our team-centered hospital culture, intimate class size, a wealth of didactic learning opportunities, research opportunities for motivated individuals, and the flexible ability to schedule elective time.

Is the intern required to live a specific distance from the hospital?
Yes
There are no restrictions on the distance to the hospital so long as they arrive at their shift on time. However, while on the surgery rotation interns are required to be able to arrive at the hospital within 1 hour of being called in.

There are various ER shifts that may be available for compensation. Selection/availability is need-based. There are also call-in fees that will apply to after hour procedures on the surgery service.

We have 43 RVTs (registered veterinary technicians) and 80 unregistered vet techs and assistants. We have several VTSs (veterinary technician specialists) in Emergency & Critical Care, Patient Care, and Neurology as well as several more technicians in the process of pursuing their VTS. We also have a Clinical Pharmacist (PharmD, FSVHP, DICVP) on staff.

Additional Information About Work Schedule
The standard schedule does not call for interns to ever be working in the ER or with hospitalized cases without senior clinician support. Overnight shifts not currently required but elective options available, and we are considering future incorporation in the program. Two days off per week (some skewing on rotation changes). On-call responsibilities currently limited to the surgery rotation only. Rotations typically three weeks in duration.

The Veterinary Specialty Hospital - North County is located in a state-of-the-art, recently expanded 16,400-square-foot facility. We recently installed the most advanced CT scanner in southern California, a 128-slice Canon Aquilion with bolus tracking for precise angiograms, cardiac gating, CT fluoroscopy capabilities, and double-slice reconstruction for accurate MPR and 3D volume rendering. We have an MRI (1.5 Siemens Magnetom), neurologic testing including EEG, EMG, NCV, and BAER testing, as well as a physical rehabilitation center (including underwater treadmill, acupuncture, TENS/NMES, therapeutic ultrasound, and PRP therapy), a state-of-the-art USP 800 compliant chemotherapy facility, and a new in-house pharmacy suite. The hospital is equipped with a brand new Storz 4k laparoscopy tower with near-infrared imaging, rigid and flexible endoscopy, warmed, humidified insufflation, and a Calculase III Ho:Yag laser lithotripter. The interventional radiology suite is equipped with an OEC 9800 12” C-Arm with a vascular package, flat screen LCD monitor upgrades, and disposables necessary for advanced vascular, hepatobiliary, and airway procedures. We also have a videoendoscope, bronchoscope, arthroscope, digital radiology unit, three ultrasound machines with color and power Doppler capability (including a portable ultrasound for bedside use), Holter monitor, telemetry, multiple temperature- and humidity-controlled oxygen cages, multiple Buster portable oxygen cages, multi-parameter patient monitors, operating microscope, an in-house extensive laboratory with CBC, chemistry panel, electrolyte, coagulation testing and blood gas capability, biologic safety cabinet, K-Laser, Aesculight CO2 laser, nerve stimulator/locator, and full service 24 hour emergency and critical care service. We have four state-of-the-art operating rooms. Our ICU is equipped with Baxter Prismax system dialysis/TPE machine, Thermax blood warmer, extracorporeal monitoring (Medtronic ACT Plus, and Fresenius crit-line IV monitor), Novum critical care crib E2083CG with scale, and Getinge Servo-U ventilator. Specialty ophthalmology equipment includes Stellaris Elite- Phacoemulsification cataract surgery machine and Frigitronics CE - 2000 Ophthalmic cryosurgery system. Our surgery rooms are equipped with multifunction bedside monitors with capabilities for arterial blood pressure monitoring, pulse oximetry, capnography, and ECG, with state-of-the-art locked plating equipment for TPLO and fracture repair. Additionally, we have dedicated intern workstations and a serenity room for employees. Additionally, we have access to radiation oncology at our nearby Sorrento Valley location. We have a self-sustaining blood banking system, which allows us access to a wide variety of products including WB, pRBC, FFP, and FP.
