The University of West Georgia Volleyball secured their first conference win of the season on Saturday afternoon after a five-set win over the Shorter Hawks.
West Georgia (7-5, 1-2) put together another defensive clinic as the Wolves recorded 16 total blocks and held the Hawks (3-7, 0-3) to a .115 hitting percentage, leading to their 3-2 win.
“We are so proud of this group especially coming off last night’s tough five-set loss,” said head coach Kara Hellmann. “This was a total team effort with different people stepping up at different times. The energy our bench brings us fueled us throughout that entire match.”
The first set was full of back-and-forth action as we found ourselves tied at 14 mid-way through before a 5-0 Shorter run put the Hawks up 19-14. A service error from Shorter’s Mia Alexander shifted the momentum back in favor of West Georgia as the Wolves used an 11-4 run to win the set, 25-23.
In the second set, Shorter jumped out to a 14-9 lead after a handful of errors from UWG. After the rough offensive start, West Georgia found their rhythm again as a kill from Sarah Pipping began a 5-1 run to tie the game at 16. For the rest of the set, the two teams traded points until a kill from the Hawks’ Emily Crocker won the set for Shorter, 25-23.
The Hawks took a quick 8-6 lead in the third set before another kill from Pipping jumpstarted a 5-0 West Georgia run, putting the Wolves up 11-8. Moments later, Shorter countered with a 5-2 run to tie the game at 13. The ending of the third set was eerily similar to the ending of the second, as the two teams trading points down the stretch with Shorter scoring the last two points to take the set, 25-23.
West Georgia’s Claire Conway was inserted late into set three and started out with the first team in set four and instantly gave UWG the jolt that they needed. The junior middle blocker recorded four blocks and one kill in set four, but none bigger than the attack she rejected with the score tied at 22 in a must-win set for the Wolves. That block from Conway ignited a 3-0 West Georgia run that clinched the set, 25-22 for UWG.
The Wolves have struggled in fifth sets this season, but that wasn’t the case here as UWG jumped out to a 6-3 lead, forcing a Shorter timeout. A kill from Pipping extended the lead to four before the Hawks responded with a 4-1 run to cut West Georgia’s lead to one. An attack error from Shorter and a kill from Sanai Young put more pressure on the Hawks, but the Wolves didn’t let up and closed out the set, 15-10.
Pipping, Young, and Zoë LaBreche all recorded double-digit kills while Desha Van Veldhuizen dished out a career-high 40 assists. Defensively, Kelli Kaiser picked up 26 digs while Taylor Allen accumulated six blocks.
West Georgia will be back in action on Friday 7:00 p.m. when they travel to Huntsville, Alabama for a GSC matchup with the Alabama Huntsville Chargers.
