Britain is past the peak of the coronavirus, the chief medical officer for England has declared. Chris Whitty said that cases, hospital admissions and deaths were falling in all four nations of the UK but warned it would be months until the pressure on hospitals eased.

Boris Johnson promised to set out target dates this month for easing the lockdown after the “milestone” of ten million people vaccinated was passed yesterday. The prime minister appears to be benefiting from a “vaccine boost” in response to the pace of immunisations, polling suggests.

Johnson said that he wanted all of England to move down the tier system at the same time, an approach that was justified by “pretty uniform” downward trends. A detailed timetable would be published
