Letter from the Editor

Mike Greenblatt Headshot
  • All Mike Greenblatt has ever done in his entire life is listen to music and tell people about it, be it as a New York City publicist, editor or freelance journalist.

It’s been five decades of journalistically chronicling rock’n’roll, blues, jazz, folk, soul and country, and it all started in New Jersey as Music Editor of the Aquarian Weekly and then in New York City as editor of Modern Screen’s Country Music, Wrestling World and Metal Maniacs.

His writing subjects fill the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He's interviewed Joe Cocker, Graham Nash, David Crosby, Carlos Santana, Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Johnny Cash, and members of The Rolling Stones and The Beatles.

His first book—Woodstock: Back To Yasgur’s Farm—about a life-changing weekend he experienced in 1969 at the age of 18, came out in 2019. He is currently the Editor of this website as well as contributing to Goldmine Magazine and The Aquarian.

Mike Greenblatt:

If this issue’s direction seems a little slanted towards E Street, that’s because it is. The “History” section has my 1982 Aquarian interview with the E Street Band’s Clarence Clemons at his Red Bank club Big Man’s West. For “Up Close,” I spoke with original E Street Band drummer Vini “Mad Dog” Lopez. (He’s in the process of writing his memoir.) Bruce appears in “Visual Sound” as he recently surprised fans by casually strolling onstage during a Zach Bryan concert. Other videos this month include one of my favorite singers, Bettye LaVette, doing the 1924 Gershwin chestnut “The Man I Love” like no one ever before. Brian K & The Parkway featuring Cat Popper (from Freehold) and Jason Didner (from Montclair) round out the section.

People have been asking when The Jersey Sound documentary is coming out and where it can be seen. We should have news on that front in next month’s issue.

In the “Jersey Bookshelf,” you’ll find photographer Frank White, who used to shoot for me in the 1990s at Metal Maniacs magazine, teaming up with vocalist/co-author Alan Tecchio—of Seven Witches, Watchtower, Hades and Non-Fiction—to put out a beautiful book, Jersey Metal, with enough memories to fill a museum. As always, there’s a new New Jersey artist to “Meet…” as well as the Calendar, Event section, a different lead news story every day and an update on our “Hot 100,” 100 songs by 100 Jersey artists. Please note:  if a band has a Jerseyite within its ranks, it counts. Thus, “Hotel California”—with Eagle Joe Walsh—who graduated from Montclair High—is represented as is Walsh’s James Gang with “Funk #49.” Then there’s “Layla,” by Derek & The Dominos, co-written by drummer Jim Gordon who was born in Elizabeth. When my friend Jay Lustig re-posted “The Jersey Sound Hot 100” on his njarts.net site, a lot of readers suggested songs to add and songs to drop and I adhered to every requested change. (I admit “Simon Says” by The 1910 Fruitgum Company, from Linden, was always awful.) If you have any comments, criticisms, advice or additions to the Hot 100, email me at hello@thejerseysound.com, and I will do as told. It’s supposed to be fun, interactive and to engender debate. Bring it on!
