Eaglet Gazette
Enfield Head Start, Integrated Pre-K, PK STEAM Academy
November 12, 2021
I had the opportunity to spend time in our parking lots this week. As you know, our school is A VERY BUSY PLACE. That coupled with the age of our occupants requires us as caregivers to be patient and flexible when dropping off and picking up. Waiting for a bus to unload 12-14 Eaglets can take some time. To avoid frustration on your end, if dropping off in the front circle is posing an issue, there are two side lots you can use. When driving around the back, I am asking you to be as cautious as you can. Little ones and their grown ups are crossing, the sun is at a new angle, and cars are moving all around. Thank you in advance for your commitment to safety.
A FEW REMINDERS for NOVEMBER:
- Early release NOVEMBER 24TH
- NO SCHOOL NOVEMBER 25TH AND 26TH
- As mentioned in the last couple of newsletters, ECDC has shifted their hours which makes 8:00 quite busy in our parking lots. If you are parking in the front lot to drop your child off, please remain aware that if a bus has a stop sign out and staff are unloading kids, YOU MAY NOT PASS THEM. Additionally, parking in the middle of the drive way to drop off poses a traffic jam. Parking in a space ensures we don't get backed up onto Post Office Road.
- Thank you for your continued dedication to keeping SELC healthy by monitoring your child for illness and communicating with Nurse Jen!

Executive Function Strategy: Mature/ Purposeful Play
Description:
Why do children choose roles?
Children choose roles to encourage mature play. Children invent and create props to fit their roles (ex: if the role was a fireman: make a fire hose, fire hat, fire truck). Mature play promotes learning new vocabulary words. These words are posted in the centers for all to see. Teachers model how to use vocabulary in mature play scenarios. Children wear a picture of the role they are in to help them remember what it is they are supposed to be doing. Action cards with the roles and actions pertaining to those roles are posted in each of the centers.
To have mature play children do the following
Children use conflict resolution
Can invent new props
Children use language to plan play and during play
Children play roles that have specific characteristics or rules for action.
Interact with one another
Use their imagination
Play episodes develop into longer sustained play over time.
Here are some examples of play scenarios:
Museum (art gallery, construction zone, café)
School (library, cafeteria, nurse, office)
Beach (refreshment stand, boat excursions, beach)
Caring for pets (groomer, vet, pet store)

Advice on quarantining from Nurse Jen!
Health and Wellness
- Per the Governor's orders, our PK"ers" are required to mask until further notice
- There are plenty of mask breaks built into the day during outside, meal, and rest times
- Please send an extra mask in the event one gets soiled so we can switch it out
- Frequent handwashing will be in place
- Vigilant cleaning of classroom materials will occur on a consistent basis
- See the daily health attestation below. This is placed at your child's classroom door. Please review this and if your child is exhibiting any symptoms of illness, please do not hesitate to reach out to nurse Jen! jmaier@enfieldschools.org 860-763-8858!
