Meals and Masks
Arriving students have the option to pick up breakfast. All students will sit at the cafeteria table labelled with their first period teacher's name and wait to be escorted to class.
Eating with a face shield (provided in second period) will be required at lunch. Students will be sitting at the same table every day. Students will choose their table the first day, after that they cannot move tables.
Greetings from Gruening Middle School!
We are very excited to bring back a small group of Gruening students into the building beginning next Tuesday for face-to-face instruction. Other students will continue online Zoom classes for the remainder of third quarter. At the beginning of fourth quarter on Monday, March 15, all Gruening students will return to the Chugiak campus for face-to-face instruction.
I also want to remind you that February conferences at the secondary level (i.e., middle schools and high schools) have been cancelled. Parent/Teacher conferences will, however, still be held on Thursday, February 11, and Friday, February 12, at elementary schools. Full day instruction at GMS will still happen on each of those two days.
We have also included “Important Bussing Information” in this newsletter. The start of second semester would be a good time to update your family’s address for the Pupil Transportation Department.
Finally, there is no school on Monday, January 18, as we honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I’d like to end this article with a quote from Dr. King that I saw on the Anchorage School District’s website this morning. Dr. King stated, “The function of education is to teach one intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character-that is the goal of true education.” It is, indeed, an honor for us at Gruening Middle School to have the opportunity to educate your student.
GO COLTS!

Important Bussing Information
Hello Gruening Families,
As bussing has not been necessary during distance learning, many families have moved and we may not have your new address. The ASD transportation department uses these addresses to ensure that we have the correct bus stop on record for your student.
Please log into Parent Connect to ensure that your student’s physical and mailing addresses are correct: https://www.asdk12.org/domain/1697 (use Retrieve my Pin and Password if you need a login reminder).
To update your address before January 19th, please email me directly with your proof of residency (this may be a screenshot, photo, or scanned/uploaded document) at schwarzburg_ilsa@asdk12.org. Examples of proof are utility bill, lease or real estate contract, etc.
Starting on January 19, parents will be able to upload documents through Parent Connect:
New Module Launch in Q ParentConnect on January 19
A new Q module is being launched on January 19. Parents will now have the ability to upload five (5) document types in Q ParentConnection:
- Birth Certificates
- Immunization Records
- Non-ASD Transcripts
- Proof of Anchorage Residency
- Legal Documents
Please review the Q ParentConnection Parent Document Upload Guide for more information.
Families may find their bus stop time and location here: http://busroutes.asdk12.org/Students/BasicTransBoundarySearch.aspx
Thank you,
Ilsa Schwarzburg, Registrar
