Message from the Principal
Hello Falcons!
Academics
Instructional Strategy of the Week!
Looking for a new way to stimulate class discussion? Try TALKING CIRCLES!
“Talking circles are useful when the topic under consideration has no right or wrong answer, or when people need to share feelings. The purpose of talking circles is not to reach a decision or consensus. Rather, it is to create a safe environment for students to share their points of view with others. (1)All comments, negative or positive, should be addressed directly to the question or issue, not to comments that another participant has made. (2)Only one person speaks at a time. Everyone else listens in a nonjudgemental way to the speaker. (3) Everyone must feel invited to participate. There should be some mechanism to ensure that a few vocal people don’t dominate the discussion. (4) Students should avoid comments that put down others or themselves, such as “I don’t think anyone will agree with me, but …”. Words like “good” or “excellent” are also forms of judgment.” Talking Circles Protocol
Literacy Corner
“Students [who] can’t read effectively fail to grasp important concepts, score poorly on tests, and ultimately, fail to meet educational milestones. Literacy skills allow students to seek out information, explore subjects in-depth, and gain a deeper understanding of the world around them.” Please see Kerstin Devlin, the literacy coach, for ways to enhance the literacy skills in your classroom. I Make a Difference!
Wow! Thank you! What an honor to be recognized by Charlotte Berron, a selfless teacher who juggles teaching, coaching, and family life with style and grace. You are amazing! Another teacher who sacrifices herself for the betterment of all her student-athletes is Erin Tonelson. Over the last two years, I have watched in awe as students, former and current, crowd around her door just to say “hey” or to ask her advice/guidance. Erin brings a positive energy that is contagious, and she has helped me find a home and a family here at Cox HS. She is the epitome of a what is means to be a Falcon, and I appreciate all that she does to make our school a place we all want to be.

All - Virginia Orchestra
Congratulations to Braden Cruz and Olivia LePage for representing at the prestigious All-Virginia Orchestra event in Richmond! This event brought together the state's top young musicians for a weekend of intensive rehearsals and an outstanding performance. This is a significant achievement of Braden and Olivia as it is incredibly challenging to earn a spot in this esteemed ensemble. The fact that two of our students were selected in the same year is truly remarkable and speaks volumes about their dedication and musical prowess. Please join me in congratulating Braden Cruz and Olivia LePage on this outstanding accomplishment. Their success reflects positively on our school and highlights the exceptional talent within our student body.
Audubon Winner
