Eaglet Gazette
Enfield Head Start, Integrated Pre-K, PK STEAM Academy
October 8, 2021
It was such a pleasure seeing so many families at Open House last night! We know how busy schedules are and it means so much to us that you took time to spend the evening at SELC!
This newsletter is packed with new information. It is a little longer than usual, but I hope you find it useful!
A few reminders:
- There is no school on Monday October 11th or Tuesday October 12th.
- Picture day is coming at the end of October! Keep a look out for more info!
Head Start: October 25th
Integrated Pre-K: October 26th
PK STEAM: October 26th
- Health and safety are top priorities and I thank you for doing your part! Nurse Jen and I continue to be impressed with how incredibly diligent all of you have been in regards to monitoring your child for illness and asking questions as they arise!
- Our parking lot might be a little busier beginning on Wednesday October 13th as ECDC has had a schedule shift. With more families coming and going around the 8:00 hour, I want to thank you in advance for your attention to safety. Little ones are everywhere. One of our speed bumps needed some repair which indicates that we still need to work on SLOWING DOWN!

Health and Wellness
- Per the Governor's orders, our PK"ers" are required to mask until further notice
- There are plenty of mask breaks built into the day during outside, meal, and rest times
- Please send an extra mask in the event one gets soiled so we can switch it out
- Frequent handwashing will be in place
- Vigilant cleaning of classroom materials will occur on a consistent basis
- See the daily health attestation below. This is placed at your child's classroom door. Please review this and if your child is exhibiting any symptoms of illness, please do not hesitate to reach out to nurse Jen! jmaier@enfieldschools.org 860-763-8858!
Executive Function Strategy: Linear Calendar
The Linear Calendar is done as a whole group activity. This is a teacher-led activity that takes the place of a typical matrix calendar activity. Children practice math concepts, counting and passage of time.
How we do it…
We use pictures of buses or backpacks to represent school days on the calendar, and pictures of houses to represent the home days. These pictures/days fall into the same pattern with 2 days home and 5 days at school. While the teacher points to each day/number the children clap while counting to help them learn one to one correspondence.
What are children learning?
*Concept of time. (order or sequence of events, before/after, yesterday/today/tomorrow, “if yesterday was 5 today is?”)
*Units of time (month, weeks, days of the week)
*Counting skills (rote and meaningful counting, numeral recognition, how many days until, how many days since)
This activity focuses on the following Executive Function skills:
Working Memory by remembering what day we are on and what is coming next; also by remembering the steps of the strategy
Self Regulation by counting and clapping out the numbers
Cognitive Flexibility by showing we can have changes in our schedule and it is okay to adjust it
