Coyote Howler
September 8, 2020
Thank you for your continued participation with our virtual learning. We know that we would not be able to do what we are doing without the support from our parents and guardians. While we are learning from our homes, teachers may have hard copies of materials for families to pick up. Thursdays are our weekly distribution days. If there are materials for pick-up, your teacher will communicate with you. Please park in our parking lot, leaving our fire lane clear, and walk to our front door. We have staff members ready to greet you and they will gather the materials for you. Please ring the bell if you have not been helped.
Our staff appreciate the grace you have offered to them as they have had to learn a new way to deliver instruction. Canvas classrooms are new to most of our teachers. This year they are learning how to teach, using a variety of applications, and navigating between programs. It has been tricky, and mistakes will be made. We try to grow and learn from the mistakes.
Teachers have posted office hours in their Canvas Classrooms. Office hours are used both for parents and students to ask questions or to get clarification on assignments. You may stay in the "waiting room" if you enter the office hours and the teacher is in a private conversation with another family.
If your child has completed the iReady diagnostic assessment, they can now access the program as a learning tool. Students should be on iReady daily for reading and math for a minimum of 15 minutes in each content area.
Sincerely,
Wendy Zorea

Library Check-Out
Hi Coyotes,
Kincaid curbside book checkout officially starts this week on Thursday, September 10! More information can be found below.
Also, if you still have library books from last school year, it is not too late to return them. Drop them off at school during curbside checkout so they can be enjoyed by other students.

Healthy Futures
Healthy Futures is BACK!!
The Healthy Futures Log is back this quarter and ready to be filled out at home by Kincaid Coyotes. Numerous studies are showing Covid-19 Closures are having negative effects on young students such as increased anxiety and depression, decreased physical activity and increase in mental health challenges1. The Healthy Futures calendar is a great way to make sure your student is staying active and eating well, something that has been shown to help reduce the negative impacts of Covid-19 Closures2. Physical activity your student typically gets at school needs to be replaced while at home during online learning. Shooting for 60 minutes per day (many students need MORE) of physical activity is the goal and many think scheduling it or tracking it helps. Eating healthy foods and getting enough sleep and drinking water is shown to help keep students healthy while at home. Feel free to use the Healthy Futures website for additional resources or reach out to us @ reale_amanda@asdk12.org akin_tim@asdk12.org mee_jenell@asdk12.org
or check with your child’s classroom teacher for more support during these unprecedented times.

Nurse Notes
Hello Families and Students,
I am excited to be the school nurse at Kincaid Elementary this school year! There are many questions and uncertainties about school resuming face-to-face attendance. My hope is to provide clarity and be a steady source of information as COVID-19 safety protocols evolve throughout the school year. Information will be sent out to students, families, and staff when school health guidelines are established at the district level (hopefully later this quarter).
Below are a couple friendly reminders…
If your child is due for routine childhood vaccinations, there are two upcoming community-based clinics that offer vaccines for free.
Providence Immunization Clinic
3340 Providence Drive, Suite A-351
(907) 212-7912
Occurs the 1st Saturday of every month - 10:00am to 1:00pm (NEXT CLINIC IS 10/03)
Ages Served: Children through 18 years of age.
Directions: Please bring your child's shot record with you. This clinic allows one family at a time. Drive to the 3rd floor of the visitor parking garage. There will be signs inside and/or outside for direction. The 3rd floor building entrance (from the parking garage) is for immunization patients only. At this entrance you can sign in and complete paperwork. The staff have you wait in your car and will call you when they are ready to see you.
Alaska Regional Hospital Immunization Clinic
2801 Debarr Road, Building E, Room 180
(907) 276-1131 or (907) 264-1105
Occurs the 3rd Saturday of every month - 9:00am to 1:00PM (NEXT CLINIC IS 9/19)
Ages Served: Children through 18 years of age.
Directions: Please bring your child's shot record with you. There will likely be signs inside and/or outside for direction or information.
Are you concerned about your child’s ability to see or hear? Ask about scheduling a vision or hearing screening with the school nurse. I will help coordinate referrals for vision or hearing evaluations when a student does not pass their health screenings.
Consider connecting with your child’s pediatrician if your kiddo will need medication or health services when school starts in-person. Authorization forms, for health services in the school setting, can be found on the ASD Healthcare Services website. I can also request these completed forms (with signed parental permission) from your medical provider after your child completes their annual visit. Please let me know if this is something you would like me to do!
SIDE NOTE: Any medication kept at the school must be in the original container it was sold within. The nurse is not allowed to accept any medications that are unlabeled or outside of their original medication container. Prescription medication must have a pharmacy label on the bottle or box. Over-the-counter medications will be labeled with the student’s name and given per manufacturer instructions.
If you have any questions, the school nurse is always available by phone, email, and zoom. Nursing office hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 4:00pm. I am happy to be a resource for families, so please reach out if there is anything you need!
Sincerely,
Rachel McCarthy, BSN, RN
