St. Margaret’s Announces New Student Commons Project, Including Dining Hall and Fitness Center—See the Film!

The Student Commons, a state-of-the art, 30,000-square-foot, two-story building, will serve all Tartans – their wellness, learning and growth.
At the Forever Plaid: Ruby Anniversary event at Balboa Bay Resort, St. Margaret’s announced the exciting next campus master planning project that aligns with its school-wide priority on community and student health and wellness.

The Student Commons, a state-of-the art, 30,000-square-foot, two-story building, will serve all Tartans – their wellness, learning and growth. A from-scratch kitchen will be at the center of the Commons serving the entire campus, with on-site chefs preparing fresh, nutritious meals throughout the day. The building will feature a great hall for dining and other gatherings. The Commons will also include a modern, equipped strength and performance fitness center, twice the size of the school’s current facilities, to support the expanding personal fitness and wellness program and all Tartan athletes. Centered between the Middle School and Upper School campuses, the Commons will open to the central Highlands Quad and Chalmers Field.

“The Commons will be a transformational addition to the student experience of every Tartan, providing community gathering spaces and innovative resources for Tartans to come together for learning, personal wellness and friendship,” Board of Trustees President Paul Westhead and Head of School Will Moseley wrote in a letter to the St. Margaret’s community. “The Student Commons is the next logical step and the greatest need in our campus planning, and the most significant investment we can make to advance our health and wellness initiatives for all Tartans and for generations to come.”

To date, there has been a quiet fundraising effort to support the launch of the project, and with support from the Board of Trustees as well as several lead donors from the community, St. Margaret’s is able to move to a school-wide fundraising effort to complete this project. This year’s Fund A Need at Forever Plaid: Ruby Anniversary raised funds to design, program and equip the Student Commons’ fitness center, with more than $400,000 donated by generous supporters that night.

“We are deeply grateful for our lead supporters of the Student Commons project, as well as our entire community for your commitment and partnership as we continue to move St. Margaret’s forward for our students,” Mr. Westhead and Mr. Moseley wrote.
