SFCC’s Early Childhood Education program announces expanded financial support this fall

Applications are open for Early Childhood Education and apprenticeship programs

Santa Fe Community College announces that expanded financial support for students studying Early Childhood Education is available for the Fall and Spring semesters.  Prospective students are encouraged to enroll now. Eligible students will be able to receive a stipend of up to $2000 after successfully completing a semester of early childhood coursework. Those who already have a bachelor’s degree in another field can qualify for the stipend by enrolling in the Alternative Teacher Licensure program for an Early Childhood Teacher Certification.  Additional funds are available for those participating in the APRENDE Early Childhood Teacher Apprenticeship program.

Director of the Early Childhood Center of Excellence Catron Allred said, “There’s never been a better time to study Early Childhood Education. Employer demand is high, wages are increasing, and SFCC is grateful for additional flexible financial resources to offer our students. In addition to the Opportunity Scholarship, ECECD Scholarships and other aid available through SFCC’s Financial Aid office, students enrolled in SFCC’s Early Childhood programs will have additional financial incentives for enrolling in the upcoming academic year. We encourage both English and Spanish speakers to apply for our programs.”

SFCC was recently awarded a New Mexico Early Childhood Educator Student Success Grant from the New Mexico Early Childhood Education & Care Department.  The grant, made possible by the federal Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriation Act, seeks to increase the number of professionals working in early childhood education by providing students with flexible financial support through stipends.  The grant will fund Student Success stipends for eligible full and part-time students and will be awarded after the successful completion of the academic term.

Students will be eligible for the N.M. Early Childhood Student Success stipends* at SFCC if they meet the following criteria:

*Stipends will be awarded at the end of the term to all students who meet the above criteria.

For students who enroll in the Early Childhood Education APRENDE Pre-Apprenticeship program there are additional funds available. The APRENDE program will give students the opportunity to gain experience in an early childhood setting and earn credits toward an associate degree. Participants will complete their early childhood education while using their skills in a 150-hour paid internship. For more information about the APRENDE workforce training programs, please see www.sfcc.edu/aprende.

Allred also noted, “The APRENDE Pre-Apprenticeship program is an amazing opportunity for individuals new to early childhood to gain experience and qualify to be an assistant teacher.  Pre-Apprentices will qualify to join the full APRENDE apprenticeship in Spring 2023.”
