Dr. Lenny Gannes became interested in the natural world at a young age. During his undergraduate degree he worked with animals: rehabilitating injured raptors, researching white pelican behavior, and working for the California Condor Recovery Program tracking wild condors. He received his B.S. in Environmental Biology and Management from the University of California at Davis. Dr. Gannes received his M.S. and Ph.D. from the department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Princeton University. His doctoral research addressed the physiology and ecology of small songbirds migrating across the Sahara Desert.
Dr. Gannes has taught high school at Santa Fe Preparatory School, and college at Prescott College, Wild Rockies Field Institute, Oberlin College, College of Santa Fe and Cornell College. He has taught a variety of field courses in the western United States and abroad, and has taught courses in environmental literature, creative writing and water policy. He currently teaches courses that place science in its evolutionary, ecological, physiological and societal contexts, including introductory biology and climate change.
