SFCC is here to help you adjust to online learning.
There is no additional fee for online courses, also known as remote or distance learning.
Support that is normally available for you in person (tutoring, advising, counseling, testing, financial aid) is available to you online, by phone or via email.
Online Class Formats
Online classes are offered in two formats: Online LIVE (Synchronous) and Traditional Online (Asynchronous). Instructors may also offer blended classes, with both online and in-person interaction.
Online LIVE Classes (Synchronous)
These classes are completely online with your instructor and your classmates meeting together at the same time. You attend live interactive class meetings facilitated by your instructor in Canvas. Meetings and communication are through chat, email and/or videoconferencing. You do additional work on your own schedule outside of class, just as you would your homework. These classes are indicated as Synchronous in the sixth column in Look for Credit Classes.
Traditional Online Classes (Asynchronous)
These classes are completely online without mandatory class meetings. You don’t have to be online at a fixed day and time with your fellow classmates and instructor. Your instructor and your classmates will communicate through Canvas and you can interact with them and access class resources on your own time. You complete all the assignments and meet the requirements of the class on your own schedule, meeting the deadlines set by your instructor. Your classmates and instructor are not necessarily online at the same time unless an appointment is scheduled. These class are indicated as Asynchronous classes in the sixth column in Look for Credit Classes.
Blended Classes
Blended Classes are a mix of in-person and online. Your courses are held both in traditional face-to-face classrooms and online (e.g. video lecture, online discussions, or activities) in Canvas. If you are taking a blended class, you are required to follow the Student On Campus Protocol when you need to be on campus for class.
Getting Started
Here’s what you need to before you start an online course. You may also check the Technical Considerations page for more information.
- A computer tablet or smart phone. If you don’t have a computer, SFCC has laptops available for loan. Contact the Library at 505-428-1352 or Office of Information Technology at 505-428-1222.
- An internet connection. If you don’t have an internet connection, you can access SFCC’s free wifi hotspots on campus.
- Computer Know-how. You have to know how to operate a computer
- Install and use software
- Connect to your service provider
- Operate the web browser, email and other applications
- Learn the capabilities, limitations, and etiquette of email, web browsing, video conferencing.
- Internet browser to access courses.
- Sufficient bandwidth to watch videos online.
- Camera or smartphone that can take digital photos and video that can be uploaded to the internet or emailed to your instructor.
- Software applications: Microsoft Word and Teams, and possibly others that your instructor requires.
- Take the Canvas Online Orientation to learn how to navigate Canvas.
- Assistive technologies are available by contacting your instructor and the Accessibility Services Office, which is dedicated to helping you with special accommodations.
