Children and adolescents in emergencies

The pandemic has seriously affected education, protection and survival of children. Children and adolescents have stopped go to school and, with that, lost protection and learning spaces. Many of them experience violence at home or in their community and do not know how to report it. The crisis has affected family economies, hitting hard on the nutrition of the most vulnerable children. The development of an entire generation is at risk.

Save the Children seeks to protect children and their communities from the negative impacts of COVID-19, which is why it started in 2020 an integrated response to limit the virus transmission, promote health and access to education, as wells as ensure information to prevent and attend violence.

7.5 million of people who lived in poverty and extreme poverty situation have seen their income severely reduce due to the pandemic.

7.9 million of schoolchildren have seen their education affected with the closure of schools due to lack of resources to access to long distance education.

More than 860.000 Venezuelan migrants in Peru are in a vulnerable situation. Many children and adolescents do not access the educational system.

In May 2021, just 0.4% of all schools returned to presential classes even when 14% of them are available to do so.

… I received the study kits which helped me study, the notebook I used as a pad to take notes on and I also made drawings in the notebook when my teacher asked me. I also participated in some meetings via Zoom, that’s where I understood more about how we should study (during the pandemic) and how to be in our house and communities.

Now every house on the hill has its kit, with a bucket, water and soap to do hand washing. I think the pandemic will be less present (in the community), because now we have a way to access hygiene that we did not have before.
