The Jerome Roche Prize for 2021 is awarded to Brianne Dolce for her article ‘“Soit hom u feme”: New Evidence for Women Musicians and the Search for the “Women Trouvères”,’ which was published in Revue de musicologie 106/2 (2020), 301–28. Dolce’s article offers a significant contribution to the history of female musicians in thirteenth-century Northern France. Looking beyond the chansonniers of the northern song tradition to other forms of archival evidence, she demonstrates that women played far more prominent and varied roles in musical life than has previously been assumed.
Dolce completed a PhD at Yale University in 2020 having previously studied at King’s College London and the University of Michigan. She is currently a Past & Present Fellow at the Institute of Historical Research, University of London.

Ross Cole receives an Honourable Mention for his article ‘Vaporwave a e s t h e t i c s: Internet Nostalgia and the Utopian Impulse,’ ASAP/Journal 5/2 (2020), 297–326. Cole’s article provides an evocative investigation of vaporwave aesthetics as an exemplar of what Svetlana Boym has termed the ‘off-modern.’
Ross Cole completed a PhD at the University of Cambridge in 2015 having previously studied at the Universities of Oxford and York. He is currently a Junior Research Fellow at Homerton College, Cambridge. His work has been published in venues such as the Journal of the Royal Musical Association, Journal of Musicology, Popular Music, 19th-Century Music, and Twentieth-Century Music, and his monograph The Folk: Music, Modernity, and the Political Imagination is forthcoming with the University of California Press.

The Jerome Roche Prize was inaugurated in 2001 in memory of the British scholar Jerome Roche (1942-1994). The prize is awarded annually by the RMA for a distinguished article by a scholar in the early stages of their career.
