Pinnacol Assurance

Pinnacol Assurance, the state’s largest workers’ compensation insurance carrier, is committed to providing everyone an opportunity to succeed and building a stronger economy for Denver and the region. That’s why the organization has partnered with Prosper CO to amplify its work.

“Being involved with Prosper CO means we’re ensuring a strong and diversified economy – in every sense of the word,” said Edie Sonn, vice president of communications and public affairs at Pinnacol Assurance. “You can’t build a stable, functioning economy for the long term on a foundation of haves and have-nots.”

Pinnacol works with over 56,000 companies in almost every sector imaginable. This means they understand the opportunities that exist – both for their own organization and the organizations they serve – to make workplaces more equitable.

Pinnacol is already a leader in many different hiring practices, such as apprenticeships, but now they are looking beyond hiring to how they be a part of creating a more inclusive economy. One way that Pinnacol is taking the lead within their own organization is by diversifying their suppliers. Pinnacol works with roughly 11,000 vendors representing $200 million. By expanding opportunities for suppliers of all backgrounds to work with Pinnacol, the organization is helping to build the strongest, most diverse economy as possible in Colorado.

“Our first step was understanding what our current footprint looks like across the Denver metro area, and also looking at organizations we work with that aren’t in Denver,” said Kelly Lutinski, chief risk officer. “The goal is to diversify our supplier footprint so that it is more consistent with the demographics of Metro Denver.”

One of the biggest opportunities that Pinnacol has identified is broadening its network of suppliers from underrepresented groups. Pinnacol looks forward to working with Prosper CO to understand the diversity of their current suppliers and increasing the diversity of their vendor ecosystem. That work ties in directly with the efforts of Prosper CO to develop a procurement platform in partnership with the Denver Metro Small Business Development Center.
