New Adventures in Exploratory Thought.

A brave way to introduce a web site, perhaps, but don't be put off; there are various examples here of my poetry and that of others. It is presented both in written and spoken form and will not strike you deaf or blind. I have also used my interest in film-making and digital art to bring a further measure of creativity to this adventure in communication. The keyword above all is 'poetry', including that of other poets. It is a quest for truth, inherent in the act of writing – operating as a redeemable philosophy – a deep search that casts a net and attempts to snag illusive and vital clues to our existence and purpose; I have no agenda in this and champion no causes, religions or political standpoints.

'The Laments of the Soul'

NEW BOOK OUT NOW!

An experimental work of prose poetry seeking a new range of poetic expression: It transcends the familiarity of truncated lines to find a different way of controlling my words. And although it may seem that these poems are more verbose than my usual style, this is not actually true; there were many edits of beautiful lines that were disregarded in favour of better flow and concise story telling. Overall, I am pleased with the outcome."

HERE ARE MY SIX BOOKS OF POETRY

"my work is merely life-illuminated – reimagined and written in slant."

You will also find, included on the 'influences page', some interesting references to my favourite poets and their work – along with readings of their poems, delivered by me on both the 'video' and 'readings' pages.

Apart from placing my own work in the public eye, my hope, is to engage with the human soul and suggest that poetry is inside all our heads and in elements of our daily lives. Poetry may provide many of the answers we seek to the deeper and more profound difficulties life presents us with.

"It may also offer a map
to help reset the compass in times of stress, frustration
and disorientation."

From the beginnings of my own involvement with poetry, I liked the way it shone a light and illuminated people who seemed to be in agreeance with my own thoughts and feelings, or pointed out new ways of looking at shared or analogous situations. In fact, there are authors, dead and alive, who I feel have walked with me for most of my adult life and offered great support with their words and the way they chose to communicate. I hope my work and other aspects of this site will be useful to you in a similar way. Peace.

A Hex on the Anointed

I came down from the mountains
to listen to the people.
They hated each other
and spoke with dark malice.
They had grown their own cancer
with a murderous media
who dealt in histrionics
and preordained conclusions.
There was no rationality,
only febrile monstrosity,
while the West bewitched its heart
with a mistaken woke...
and with the accepted guilt;
and the rotten heartache;
and the terrible self-doubt
of a wounded conscience.

They did envy the mountains though –
those static lords –
keeping as always, a perfect distance.
I will return with a vision –
wide and calling –
a broader interpretation,
and a new kind of peace.

I recently added my version of 'Look Inside the book' to the books pages. It displays random spreads for each of the books in a controllable slide show.

“Genuine poetry can communicate
before it is understood.”

T. S. Eliot – American Poet – 1888-1965

"Poetry is just the evidence of life. If your life is burning well, poetry is just the ash."

Leonard Cohen – Canadian poet/songwriter 1934-2016

Check out my 'Gain of Function' anthology on the books page and follow me on X (twitter).

Over the last few years, I have been publishing some new poems direct to X (twitter) which are now published in traditional book form, along with many new poems from the same period. These poems became a powerful anthology containing some of my best work. I found that the immediacy of being able to 'go live' with new work to be a very dynamic experience. The anthologised poems seem charged with a desirable energy – a directness – almost a reckless excitement. Take a look at 'Gain of Function'.
