Road reconstruction typically requires warmer weather. In this part of the country that means road construction overlaps with the primary visitor season of May through October. In the summer of 2024 there will be several road construction projects that may impact travel times within the Glacier National Park area.
Going-to-the-Sun Road The west side of Going-to-the-Sun Road will undergo the last phase of construction work that began in May 2023. The last 2.8 miles of construction will focus on paving Going-to-the-Sun Road, starting west of Sprague Creek Campground up to North Lake McDonald Road. Construction will resume in April 2024. The final 2.8-mile gravel stretch is expected to be paved by Memorial Day. Visitors should anticipate up to a 30-minute wait during paving operations. Work on road shoulders and striping is expected to take the balance of the summer. Minimal delays are expected during this work. Weekend work is likely during paving operations. There are no nightime closures in the construction zone planned at this time. Any updates to night closures will be posted here. Visitors should check this page before their visit if they intend to visit at night. Upper McDonald Creek Bridge
