NLM Invests $8 Million to Develop Diverse Biomedical Informatics, Data Science Training Programs

September 27, 2022

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) is issuing grants to 12 institutions to support short-term biomedical informatics and data science training programs. NLM will issue these awards on an annual basis ($1.6 million each year) for five years, totaling an investment of $8 million to develop programs that prepare students for biomedical informatics and data science graduate studies and research careers.

These programs will support 135 undergraduate and masters-level students per year in short-term—mostly summer—training programs. Each institution will implement a plan to enhance the recruitment and retention of trainees from historically underrepresented groups in these fields to advance a well-trained, diverse research workforce for the future.

Recipients of the Short-Term Research Education Experiences to Attract Talented Students to Biomedical Informatics/Data Science Careers and Enhance Diversity awards will focus their training programs in the following areas: health care, clinical and translational informatics, precision medicine, public health informatics, personal health informatics, and data science.
