Welcome to the New England Regional World History Association

The New England Regional World History Association (NERWHA), an independent affiliate of the international World History Association (WHA), exists to advance scholarship, teaching, and the public understanding of world history throughout New England. NERWHA supports and works to advance scholarship and teaching within a trans-national, trans-regional, and trans-cultural perspective. Through the researchers, teachers, students, independent scholars, and authors who are its members, NERWHA fosters historical analysis undertaken not from the viewpoint of nation-states, discrete regions, or particular cultures, but from that of the human community. To this end, NERWHA supports a number of academic and pedagogical activities and forms of outreach, including semi-annual symposia, held respectively in the fall and spring. At these symposia researchers and teachers assemble to discuss both the most recent research and developments in the field and ways in which these breakthroughs can be integrated into the classroom at all levels, K-20.

Recap of the Fall 2023 NERWHA Symposium: “Ships and Seafarers in World History”

The New England Regional World History Association (NERWHA) and Tall Ships America held a one-day symposium, “Ships and Seafarers in World History,” on Saturday, 28 October 2023, at the Northeast Maritime Institute (NMI) in Fairhaven, MA.

45 symposium attendees were treated to a stimulating keynote presentation by Timothy Walker of the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, “Assessing Historic Changes to Weather over Global Oceans Using Age-of-Sail Logbooks from Yankee Whalers and the Portuguese Navy (c. 1760-1920).” Walker’s presentation was followed by six panels and a special lunchtime presentation by Michael Dyer of the New Bedford Whaling Museum.

Discussion has already started regarding a fall 2024 symposium. Information about the conference theme and venue will be posted as soon as the details are determined.

Time to Renew Your NERWHA Membership

Please consider renewing your membership for 2024 if you do not have a multi-year membership. Our activities are open to all, but it is memberships and the modest annual dues for membership that fuel those activities.  The money raised goes to subvent members’ travel to WHA conferences, an annual donation to support of the work of the WHA, and the underwriting of a significant part of the costs of our in-person symposia.
