Call For Papers: All 3 NCFR Journals Collaborate to Promote Anti-Racist Family Scholarship

Deadline Extended to Aug. 20, 2021

The three flagship journals of the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR), invite submissions for a series of special issues on the theme: Transformative Family Scholarship: Theory, Practice, and Research at the Intersection of Families, Race, and Social Justice.

The special issues provide an opportunity to showcase cutting edge theory, research, and practices that engage the Family Science community with scholarship that promotes anti-racist and social justice efforts. We invite manuscripts offering exemplars of racial and social justice-centered family theory, practice, and research that challenge and revise dominant cultural perspectives, approaches, and interpretations related to families and communities.

Journal of Family Theory & Review (JFTR) seeks manuscripts that advance theory development on structural racism and racialization of families. JFTR encourages integration and growth in the multidisciplinary and international domains of inquiry that define contemporary Family Science. The journal publishes original contributions in all areas of family theory, including new advances in theory development, reviews of existing theory, and analyses of the interface of theory and method, as well as integrative and theory based reviews of content areas, and book reviews. JFTR draws from a broad range of the social sciences although scholarship based within the disciplines of Family Science, sociology, developmental and social psychology, communications, health and allied fields is favored. Families are viewed broadly and inclusively to include individuals of varying family structures, ages, genders, sexual orientations, race-ethnicities, and nationalities. The journal does not publish empirical papers with the exception of meta-analyses.

Journal of Marriage and Family (JMF) seeks manuscripts that investigate the ways structural racism and racialized individual and group processes affect families. JMF will prioritize manuscripts that center race while also examining intersections with gender, social class, sexuality, and nativity. JMF has been the leading research journal in the family field for more than 75 years and is consistently the most highly cited journal in Family Science. JMF features original research using the variety of theoretical perspectives and methods reflective of the full range of social sciences, including quantitative, qualitative, and multi-method designs; research interpretation; and critical discussion concerning all aspects of marriage, other forms of close relationships, and families, viewed broadly and inclusively. JMF also welcomes articles that examine how existing research would benefit from using alternative approaches, articles that bridge disciplinary theories and methods and articles that introduce novel frameworks for analyzing the family. The journal also publishes brief reports.

Family Relations: Interdisciplinary Journal of Applied Family Science (FR) seeks manuscripts highlighting approaches in research and applied practice that help identify challenges families face in relation to social injustice, inequality, bias, and differences in accessibility and inclusion. Manuscripts should highlight how to support families and positive contribute to growth and change. FR is the premier applied journal of Family Science emphasizes family research with implications for intervention, education, and public policy. FR publishes original, innovative, and interdisciplinary empirical studies, literature reviews, and conceptual analyses that focus on diverse families and family issues. Published articles address the needs of practitioners, including specific recommendations for prevention and intervention.
