Soldier - His story, his rescue, and how we hope to help save his life.

Updated: Apr 24, 2023

It was a big week here in Morrillo. Quite intense really. If you were following along on social media, you know what I'm talking about. Soldier - the Azuero Howler Monkey, came down from the canopy and within inches of losing his life right in front of us.

Was it a wild animal asking for help? I truly believe so. The monkeys have never allowed us to get so close to them before, nor have we ever tried. Or perhaps, he was just sick, tired, and trying to make his travels through the jungle as easy as possible.

Living so closely to wildlife is nothing but a true wonder every day. It's something you never get accustomed to. Especially when it's an animal facing extinction. Coming from a place like Colorado, where we were surrounded by wildlife too; Deer, Elk, Bears, Mountain Lions, among others, there were several times they needed help from humans because their problems were caused by humans. They got wrapped up in fences, hit by cars, stuck in areas they couldn't get out, etc.

Here in the jungle, it's a bit of a different story. This is the story of Soldier the monkey. He was most likely injured in a territorial battle with another monkey as they don't face many other threats. He is currently being treated and recovering from a serious injury to his tail.

The video tells you more about Soldier and the rest of his troop. Such beautiful animals, we are so fortunate to be able to live among them here in the jungles of Panama. We hope you enjoy this little video about Soldier and his troop of monkeys. We will keep you posted as he progresses.
