The topic of storytelling is an integral part of the AWEC program experience. Throughout the course of the program year, AWEC fellows define and refine the story of their business. In our 2022-2023 Annual Report: A Collection of Stories of Resilience, Growth & Collaboration, we decided it was time to take a page out of our playbook and share OUR story, the AWEC story. However, while AWEC as a program might be the origin story, we are simply planting the seed. We see ourselves not as the author, but rather, the editor, bringing together seemingly disparate characters and plotlines in a way that allows them to rise off of the metaphorical page (or screen) and truly dance.

Our cooperative is a collection of intertwined stories, an anthology of African women-run SMEs who are displaying resilience and ingenuity to beat the odds and grow their business ideas into sustainable, fundable ventures. Our fellows and alumnae are writing each consecutive chapter. The character development that takes place, the twists and turns of their plotlines, the relationships that develop amongst characters - we’re proud to play a small role and bear witness to this immense growth.

As last year marked our fifth year of operations and our cooperative of African women entrepreneurs grew to 1,000+, we decided that the theme of our fundraiser is #TheNext1000, symbolizing that we are continuing our mission of building a more equitable Africa for women entrepreneurs across the continent. #TheNext1000 is a chapter in the story of AWEC, and our story could not be told without our first 1,000 entrepreneurs.

There are 1,000 more stories of African women entrepreneurs. They might differ in plot, characters or theme, but these women are united in their mission to scale their businesses and lift up their communities. Please join us at supporting the next generation of African women entrepreneurs. Please donate to #TheNext1000 today!
