Fairy rings are arcs or rings of mushrooms that occur in nature, creating a glorious and unexpected architectural form that emerges from the forest floor. Beyond the natural and scientific explanation of these rings, there is ancient lore and myth associated with their occurrences that span across cultures and geographical locations around the world. Depending on the folklore stepping inside a fairy ring can be a positive or negative experience. They were seen as portals, an omen, a curse, a space for witches or fairies to dance, or even a way to enhance fertility.

Lights is a half-mile walking trail that leads viewers through a series of immersive light installations featuring honeycombs, vines, crystals, and other natural features integrated into the forest. The experience offers a range of approachable, multi-sensory works created by Meredith Connelly that are site-specific to the Whitewater Center located in Charlotte, North Carolina. These works were temporary.
