Benefits

We care about the well-being of our employees and their families, and we believe in providing comprehensive employee benefits. The benefits listed below are available to our regular-status employees.

Health and Welfare Plans

Mathematica offers a variety of health and welfare benefits to suit the differing needs of our employees and their families.

Medical Insurance

Mathematica offers two preferred provider organization (PPO) plans and a high-deductible health plan at all locations. These plans provide coverage for a wide variety of services, including prescription drug coverage. Premiums are subsidized by Mathematica. Participants in these plans also have access to a telemedicine service and personalized health care guidance and support.

Health plan price transparency helps consumers know the cost of a covered item or service before receiving care. Machine-readable files that disclose pricing information for the PPO plans and high-deductible health plan are available here. Files for the health maintenance organization plan offered to employees who reside in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia are available here.

Dental Insurance

Mathematica's comprehensive dental plan includes full coverage for routine preventive care as well as partial coverage for other dental services, including orthodontic care for dependent children. Premiums are subsidized by Mathematica.

Vision Plan

A vision plan is available that covers annual exams with just a co-pay. This plan provides an allowance for glasses or contacts, discounts on lens enhancements, savings on Lasik, and special offers.

Health Care and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts

Individual health care and dependent care accounts allow employees to use pre-tax dollars to pay for dependent care and out-of-pocket medical expenses for themselves or their dependents.

Health Savings Account

A health savings account allows employees in the high deductible health plan to use pre-tax dollars for out-of-pocket medical expenses for themselves, spouses, and children. Employees decide how to use this account, including whether to save it or spend it for health care expenses.

Life and Accident Insurance

Mathematica offers income protection to our employees by covering the cost of life and accident insurance. In addition, employees may purchase supplemental group term life insurance for themselves, their spouse or domestic partner, and their dependent children.

Temporary and Long-Term Disability Coverage

Disability insurance helps an employee meet continuing financial obligations if temporarily or permanently disabled. This benefit provides some salary replacement to those who are unable to work due to a non-occupational illness or injury. Mathematica also provides workers' compensation insurance in the event of a workplace illness or injury.

Employee Ownership

Employee-ownership gives us a healthy control over our own destiny. It allows us to only pursue work that furthers our mission and enables all employees to reap the professional and financial benefits. We aren’t a “top-down” organization; the work we pursue at both the individual and company levels is staff-driven and self-directed.

Mathematica’s ownership culture originated in 1986, when a group of employees purchased the company from its corporate parent. Being an independent, employee-owned firm empowered us to define and further our mission; it also enhanced our quality and accountability, as well as the financial strength of the company. That vision solidified in 2005, with implementation of an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), a retirement plan through which all employees receive shares of company stock. Today, Mathematica is 100 percent employee owned, and the value of employees’ ESOP holdings has increased in tandem with the company’s growth and financial strength.

Retirement Plans

Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP)

At Mathematica, we believe that being an employee-owned company has significantly contributed to our success. In addition, ownership by employees provides the framework for long-term growth. The company makes contributions to the ESOP annually, which are then invested in Mathematica stock on behalf of eligible employees. Read more.

401(k) Profit-Sharing Plan

Mathematica's 401(k) profit-sharing plan is designed to help employees save for retirement by allowing them to set aside pre- or post-tax income, which the company then matches based on company profits. The company also makes a base contribution for each eligible participant, whether or not they choose to make deferrals to the plan. The base contribution is also derived from company profits. Employees decide how the contributions will be invested from a broad set of investment options.

Time Off

Paid Time Off (PTO)

Mathematica recognizes that individual lives do not always fall into well-defined categories. Therefore, PTO may be used for any purpose: vacation, your own illness, care for a family member, religious observance, or a personal emergency. Employees earn additional PTO as service grows, up to a maximum of 30 days per year.

Holidays

Mathematica recognizes eight paid holidays.

Professional Growth

Career Development

At Mathematica, we emphasize continuous learning and individual growth. Our small-company environment is ready to help you pursue a career path that matches your abilities and desire to achieve. Career development is encouraged through on-site training, job performance discussions, and internal job postings.

Tuition Reimbursement

Mathematica is committed to supporting staff who pursue continued professional growth and career development. We consider reimbursement for educational expenses an important vehicle for addressing that need. The tuition reimbursement benefit provides employees with assistance to increase performance effectiveness in their present positions and encourages them to obtain skills, knowledge, and abilities that may improve their opportunities for career advancement within the organization.

Work Life Benefits

Online Therapy

Online therapy is available free-of-charge to all employees and their eligible dependents. This service offers confidential access to a network of thousands of licensed mental health providers and behavioral health care professionals through a mobile app and web platform. The benefit includes two video chats with a therapist per month and 13 video chats with a psychiatrist or nurse practitioner specializing in psychiatry annually.

Employee Assistance Program

Mathematica's Employee Assistance Program provides employees and members of their household with confidential advice and support in addressing a broad range of personal concerns and life issues. Coordinators are available anytime to listen or make referrals to local resources in the community.

Transportation Benefit

The transportation benefit permits employees to pay for certain transportation-related expenses with pre-tax dollars, thereby avoiding most income and payroll taxes. It also allows for convenient home delivery of monthly passes from a growing list of transit and parking providers.

Bicycle Commuter Benefit

The bicycle commuter benefit is employer-funded. It provides a reimbursement of up to $20 per month for certain bicycle expenses to employees who regularly use a bicycle for a substantial portion of the travel between their residence and place of employment.

529 Plan—College Savings Plan

This plan allows employees to save for their own or a family member's educational expenses through payroll deduction. The earnings in a 529 plan grow tax deferred, and, when the beneficiary of the plan is enrolled in an educational institution, qualified withdrawals are tax free.

Family Care

Finding the right ongoing care for your family can be hard, especially when you're balancing the demands of work. That's why Mathematica provides access to an online community for finding and managing care for children, seniors, and pets, and housekeeping services.

Milk Stork

Mathematica understands the stress that breast feeding parents take on when traveling for work. We offer Milk Stork as an option for parents which allows them to continue to pump while away and transport their breast milk back home. The shipping is express and allows you to ship fresh and/or frozen breast milk.

Adoption Benefit

Mathematica recognizes that employees who adopt a child incur expenses not covered by our usual benefit plans. This benefit provides some financial support for third-party adoptions.

This benefit provides legal advice and fully covered legal services in support of a variety of issues such as estate planning, real estate closings, civil suits, traffic tickets, and creditor issues.

Parental Leave

Parents of newborns and adopted children can obtain a paid leave of absence through our parental leave benefit. The purpose of paid parental leave is to enable parents to care for and bond with a newborn or a newly adopted child. Mathematica’s parental leave benefit combines a monetary supplement with an optional two-week leave period.

Financial and Loan Resources

We value the personal and professional accomplishments of our colleagues and recognize the impact that financial stress associated with higher education or other major life changes can have on employees and their families. We provide access to SoFi, a platform that provides options for student loan refinancing for private student loans, home loans and home loan refinancing, and personal loans for you and your family members.
