Sometimes the better team doesn’t always win.

Top seed P.K. Yonge led No. 2 seed Bolles (Jacksonville), 2-0, at the half, and were one half away from their first state semifinal appearance in school history.

However, the visiting Bulldogs tied it in regulation and won it in double overtime, 3-2, in a Class 3A-Region 1 Final.

“We’re always excited for the challenge of playing Bolles,” said P.K. Yonge coach Rebecca Schackow. “They’re historically such a great program. A lot of state championships, so we were thrilled to be able to host them. I’ll just boldly say, I felt like we were the better team tonight. We played awesome.”

The Lady Blue Wave were locked in early and got goals from sophomores Emma Mansfield and Faith Hardy to go up two. They were just one half away from a final four berth.

“They truly were outplaying us,” said Bolles coach Matt Tracy. “Sometimes you’re losing 2-0 and it’s because of things you are doing wrong. But they just had so much energy, they were winning every 50-50 ball. They really had control.”

Senior Annalise Cannada scored the game-winner for Bolles (15-6-3) with 4:23 to play in the second overtime.

“We thought that if we could create that situation with her isolated with one or two of their backs that she was a little faster,” Tracy said.

Cannada finished with a hat trick, adding two goals in regulation, including the tying goal with 6:27 to play.

“She is phenomenal,” Schackow said. “Just when you think you’ve got her figured out, she bursts out and surprises you with something new. She’s super athletic, fit, and had a great strike on the ball tonight.”

Hardy narrowly missed a goal wide right with 6:52 to play in the first overtime that could have possibly won it for P.K. Yonge (14-5-1).

“To be honest, the two overtimes, we were just exhausted,” Schackow said. “Maybe they were more fit than we were this year, I’m not sure, but we gave it our all and we have no regrets on, ‘oh we should have done this differently or we should have worked harder.’ We could not have worked any harder. We gave it our all, we left in on the field.”

It was the second straight year that the Lady Blue Wave had lost in the region final, falling by the same score last year to Providence (Jacksonville).

This year’s exit was much different than last year, as they trailed 3-0 against Providence and rallied.

Even though “it stings to not win,” Schachow was able to walk off the field with a smile on her face.

“We had an amazing season,” she said. “Our two seniors, Madison Buss and Chloe Westbrook showed up really well tonight, but all season long, just leading our girls, and I think doing things that no one expected. We have a young team and I don’t think anyone expected us to get this far.”
