For those unaware, in January I was accepted onto the Board of Directors for the Pittsburgh Urban Magnet Project (PUMP), a local non-profit organization that fosters a community for #growth and #talent retention. You might be familiar with a few of our events such as the Pittsburgh Sports League (PSL), Pittsburgh 40 under 40, and the Steel City World Cup (among many other #community building and #civic #engagement programs). One of PUMP's greatest overarching priorities is to retain young talent in Pittsburgh. As a member of the board, I have been working with a group of diligent and creative local leaders to consistently host the events listed above, but also begin to develop lasting connections and pipelines to our local universities and institutions. By doing so, we are confident that taking this first step will allow this city to be more well-connected in the post-pandemic era and encourage college students and young professionals to explore our communities and be willing to make a change. Last week, Deloitte announced it was reviewing its business and presence in Russia in light of the escalating violence the Russian Government is inflicting upon the people of Ukraine. We are witnessing, in horrific detail, the situation deteriorate, and we have decided to separate our practice in Russia and Belarus. Deloitte will no longer operate in these countries. We know this is the right decision. But it will have an impact on Deloitte’s ~3,000 professionals located in Russia and Belarus. Like others, we know our colleagues there have no voice in the actions of their government. Pittsburgh's tech community is heating up. In just the past few months, two of the region's most promising homegrown tech companies — Duolingo Inc. and Aurora Innovation Inc. — have had IPOs. These exits represent a sign of success for Pittsburgh's startup community. Pittsburgh's harboring of tech-based emerging companies is also on the rise. In the most recent quarter, Pittsburgh tech firms saw more capital investment than the prior two quarters combined at over $121 million and bringing the region's total to $228.04 million across 71 companies this year. And in September, global research firm Startup Genome ranked Pittsburgh No. 23 globally in its 2021 list of Emerging Startup Ecosystems. But Pittsburgh's youngest companies aren't just raising money and hiring workers.
