  • Thesis: Synthesys of Aryl Sulfonates

    A general method for isolating and purifying aryl sulfonates derived from the sulfodehalogenation of cyclopentadienyl iron-functionalized aryl chlorides has been optimized.     A general method for isolating and purifying aryl sulfonates derived from the sulfodehalogenation of cyclopentadienyl iron-functionalized aryl chlorides has been optimized. By adsorbing the crude aryl sulfonate product onto silica gel, running a tightly controlled column, and carrying out several solvent rinses, the final aryl sulfonates could be effectively isolated. Reaction conditions and times have also been optimized to maximize yield. This known reaction, coupled with the newly-discovered workup steps, affords aryl sulfonates in good yields and purity, some of which are difficult to synthesize using conventional approaches involving electrophilic aromatic substitution. Eighteen readily available aryl chlorides are thus transformed into their corresponding aryl sulfonates, with each step of the reaction being shown to go to completion.

    The idea of utilizing literacy activities in content-area classes in order to incorporate aspects of reading instruction has proved to be a contentious issue between reading specialists and content-area teachers. While the traditional mantra has stated that every teacher must also be a reading teacher, many content-area teachers feel that they have insufficient training to do so or that the inclusion of extended texts is not beneficial enough to warrant allocating time to in an already crowded curriculum. This paper evaluates arguments for and against content-area literacy activities in mathematics with a specific focus on students with learning disabilities. The study examines the case of David, a student with severe language-related disabilities whose performance in mathematics is above average. Common math activities he encounters are examined in order to determine the specific language and reading skills necessary to succeed in mathematics. A content-area literacy activity involving the use of a fictional story to elucidate the Pythagorean Theorem is examined and discussed.
