In an effort to improve and diversify scientific resources for cancer research, head and neck surgeon Thomas J. Ow, MD, MS, an investigator at Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center, has established a valuable library of head and neck squamous cell cancer cultures. Using a method called 'conditional reprogramming,' Dr. Ow was able to create cell lines directly from patient tumors. The resulting library of cell lines from Montefiore Einstein patients will ultimately help researchers everywhere better understand key characteristics of tumors in people from underrepresented groups, such as African American and Hispanic adults. The project was a goal of Dr. Ow's since he received a grant from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Dental & Craniofacial Research in 2018, along with funding from the Price Family Foundation and a grant for diversity research linked to a collaboration with MD Anderson Cancer Center and Baylor College of Medicine. Diabetes affects over 38 million Americans. Maintaining near-normal blood sugar levels reduces complications. Three papers co-authored by diabetes researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine were included in April’s issue of Diabetes Care, exploring emotional distress's impact on treatment adherence and therapy effects on patients' well-being. Diabetes affects more than 38 million Americans. People with diabetes who keep their blood sugar levels in the near-normal range generally have a much lower risk of developing diabetes complications such as heart, kidney, and eye diseases. Three papers co-authored by diabetes researchers at Einstein are included in a special collection of reports in April’s issue of Diabetes Care describing results of the multicenter Glycemia Reduction Approaches in Diabetes: A Comparative Effectiveness Study (GRADE). The Einstein papers focus on whether emotional distress often associated with type 2 (T2D) diabetes affects adherence to treatment and success in controlling blood-sugar levels and whether particular diabetes therapies influence patients’ emotional distress levels. #diabetes #DiabetesTreatment #DiabetesResearch #type2 #T2D #health #research

Asthma-related hospital visits in #TheBronx exceed the state average by 3x! Social determinants of health (SDOH) such as inadequate housing are contributing factors. Montefiore Einstein’s Dr. Sunit Jariwala and his team have developed ASTHMAXcel, an application designed to provide information on pollen counts and guidance on using a "peak flow meter" to anticipate asthma attacks.
