In our 13th and final session of the "In-House Counsel: Law & Practice" series, we dived into the exciting world of entertainment and media law. Our guest speakers, Kobie Conner from Netflix and Adeoye (Ade) Johnson from The Walt Disney Company, illustrated the unique aspects of working in this industry and the key role of in-house counsel to their companies’ success. Entertainment and media lawyers play a crucial role behind the scenes in shaping our culture and the law, especially in the area of intellectual property. Kobie Conner, with his extensive background before Netflix, having also worked at Paramount Pictures, 20th Century Fox and The Walt Disney Company, brings a wealth of experience in business affairs and leadership roles. He reflected on his experiences advising TV and film studios in working with celebrities, venues, and actors. Adeoye Johnson, with his previous practice background in international trade, regulatory compliance, and policy issues, provided unique insights into the transition into the media and entertainment space at Disney, with the transferable skills that he built through private practice in international trade. From navigating Name, Image, and Likeness (“NIL”) rights to addressing the artificial intelligence issues arising in the recent writers/actors labor strike, in relation to emerging complex intellectual property issues, Kobie and Adeoye discussed how entertainment and media lawyers must be adept in a wide array of legal fields, including administrative, antitrust, contracts, corporate, copyright, labor law, First Amendment, and tax law. During the session, our speakers addressed students’ questions about their career paths, day-to-day responsibilities, and the corporate cultures at their respective organizations and the differences between advising a tech-focused, high-growth startup versus a mature media company. Kobie and Adeoye also shared advice for aspiring in-house counsel and highlighted the importance of staying current with key business trends affecting their industries. We are grateful to Kobie Conner and Adeoye Johnson for showing our students pathways to employment in the vast global entertainment and media industries and how inherently international their legal work is for their companies.
