(Washington, D.C.) – Indianapolis–based Lumina Foundation awarded a $325,000 grant today to the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.
A natural pairing, Lumina Foundation is committed to making opportunities for learning beyond high school available to all and its new Racial Justice and Equity Fund will help carry forward this work with greater force by fostering racial equity, diversity and inclusion to address systemic racism in the United States. The national Lawyers’ Committee’s mission is to secure equal justice for all through the rule of law, targeting in particular the inequities confronting African Americans and other marginalized people of color.
“Through the Educational Opportunities Project, we are committed to mobilizing a robust, cross-sector defense of race-conscious admissions inside and outside of the courts,” said David Hinojosa, director of the Educational Opportunities Project. “We are acutely aware that the fight for race-conscious admissions is tied to the much broader fight for racial equity in higher education. Race-conscious admissions is a tool for the larger goals of expanding educational access, contesting a ‘colorblind’ framework, and acknowledging and fighting against structural racism.”
