AAPPL Parent/Guardian Proctoring

Parents, guardians, and other responsible adults can administer the AAPPL at home in a supervised and appropriate environment, while maintaining the integrity of the test. Please read through the brief instructions below or refer to the Parent/Guardian Testing Guide for Schools for a more comprehensive guide to the process.

  1. Order your tests on the LTI Client Site by selecting the Parent/Guardian proctoring option when uploading your Test Request Form. (Be confident ordering as many tests as you may possibly need, as LTI never charges schools for the number of tests ordered, but rather invoices based on the number of tests completed.)
    Client Site proctor mode
  2. Review the AAPPL Parent/Guardian Proctoring Instructions. We've streamlined the instructions to help support your families better as they prepare to give the AAPPL at home. See below for translated versions of the instructions that you can offer to parents.
    AAPPL Parent/Guardian Proctoring Instructions (English)
In Arabic In Japanese In Portuguese
In Cantonese In Korean In Russian
In French In Kurdish In Spanish
In German In Mandarin In Swahili
In Haitian Creole In Nepali In Thai
In Hindi In Polish In Urdu
    In Italian In Vietnamese

  3. Determine your testing plan.
    • Do you want your students to take all four AAPPL modes? Or only some?
    • Is there a specific order in which you’d like them to take the test?
    • Share the test Topics with your students.
    • Do you need at-home proctors to sign an agreement? Perhaps this AAPPL Parent/Guardian Testing and Proctoring Agreement will help you meet that need. Please note that use of this or any proctoring agreement is not required by ACTFL or LTI. This agreement is provided as an example that is intended to meet the needs of most users. If your school or district requires an agreement in another format or that includes different or additional information, please feel free to create such a document of your own.
    • Relay your plan to families when you send them the Parent/Guardian Proctoring Instructions and begin helping them to prepare for testing.
  4. Once families have carefully read through the Parent/Guardian Proctoring Instructions, distribute the student log-in details to them.
    • The student login information can be found on the Client Site, within the AAPPL Test Status Menu by entering your testing date range and searching. From there you will be able to access each student's log-in credentials and share them via e-mail or your preferred communication method.
  5. Parent/Guardian proctors may reach out to schools and teachers for support before or while testing. Please review the Parent/Guardian Testing Guide for Schools and save it as a resource for helping families to troubleshoot their systems and answer common questions. Due to FERPA/COPPA constraints, LTI can only speak to the school and the teachers/administrators that ordered the test. We are not able to communicate with students or their parents/guardians directly.

ALIRA Parent/Guardian Proctoring

Parents, guardians, and other responsible adults can administer the ALIRA at home in a supervised and appropriate environment, while maintaining the integrity of the test. Please read through the instructions below and review the documentation provided in the links.

  1. Order your tests on the LTI Client Site by selecting the Parent/Guardian option when uploading your Test Request Form. (Be confident ordering as many tests as you may possibly need, as LTI never charges schools for the number of tests ordered, but rather invoices based on the number of tests completed.)

  2. Review the ALIRA Parent/Guardian Proctoring Instructions. We’ve streamlined the instructions to help support your families better as they prepare to give the ALIRA at home. Click here for the Spanish translation of the ALIRA Parent/Guardian Proctoring Guide. Other language translations can be made available on request.
  3. Determine your testing plan.
    • Does your school or district require a signed agreement from at-home proctors? If so, you may find this document helpful: ALIRA Parent/Guardian Testing and Proctoring Agreement.
    • Provide families with the ALIRA Parent/Guardian Proctoring Instructions and begin helping them to prepare for testing.
  4. Once families have carefully read through the Parent/Guardian Proctoring Instructions, distribute the student log-in details to them.
    • The student login information can be found on the Client Site, within the Tests Scheduled Menu by entering your testing date range and searching for ALIRA. From there you will be able to access each student's log-in credentials by clicking Print Labels - All Records. A new window will open allowing you to view all students' login information and export them to Word, PDF, Excel, etc. Please share them with families via e-mail or your preferred communication method.
  5. Parent/Guardian proctors may reach out to schools and teachers for support before or while testing. Please review the ALIRA Proctoring Guide and save it as a resource for helping families to troubleshoot their systems and answer common questions. Due to FERPA/COPPA constraints, LTI can only speak to the school and the teachers/administrators that ordered the test. We are not able to communicate with students or their parents/guardians directly.

AAPPL Computer Proctoring

ACTFL and LTI are proud to offer a computer-proctored solution for AAPPL testing. Test takers who are 13 years old and older in 9th-12th grade can test using an AI-based virtual monitoring tool that both protects their privacy and safeguards the integrity of the testing process.

This is an overview of how the remote proctoring process works. Full support documentation for students and teachers can be found below. This Video Tutorial is available now to guide students through the process, step-by-step. We also have a series of animated tutorial videos to share with your students. Please read through the brief instructions below or refer to the AAPPL Computer Proctoring Teacher Guide for a more comprehensive guide to the process.

  • At least 24 hours before you want your students to begin taking their tests, upload your Test Requests on the Client Site, selecting Computer Proctoring mode. You will need to select the date range during which the computer proctored tests will be available for students to take. Select a start and end date for your testing window. The system will automatically default to 12am on the dates selected; if you’d like to choose a different time for the testing window to open and expire, click the clock icon next to each date.
    Computer proctor mode
  • Before providing students with their login information, you should verify that, if required by your state, district, or school, parents/guardians have given permission for each student to use remote proctoring. Since proctoring requires that students record themselves via a webcam while testing, this may be a legal obligation in your area. No student under the age of 13 may test via Computer Proctoring.
  • When you're ready to access your students' login information on the Client Site within the Test Status menu, you’ll retrieve an LTI ID that works on the remote proctoring site, automatically connecting students to their ordered AAPPL test(s). It’s a single sign-on process for students; they just enter their login information on the proctoring site, and it validates their AAPPL credentials and starts their test for them within the secure proctoring system.
  • Once you receive parental consent (if required) and distribute the student login information, students are ready to test at home. You should send them this detailed support document, Computer Proctoring Guide for Students, and direct them to view this step-by-step video tutorial.
  • Share the test Topics with your students.
  • Using the remote proctoring platform costs $4 per student. Since the comfort and convenience of students testing at home and their families is important to us, we have ensured that they have the flexibility to test over multiple sessions. Though it is preferred that students complete the computer proctored AAPPL in two sittings, we can accommodate up to four testing sessions per student, if needed. To be clear, the charge is $4 per student, not $4 per mode/component that each student completes.
  • The computer proctoring system records students while they test. Students are warned in advanced of prohibited actions that will cause their tests to be flagged for review by LTI. Some examples of prohibited actions that the system detects include:
    • using papers, notes, or books,
    • opening documents on their computers or searching the internet,
    • taking notes digitally or by hand,
    • leaving the webcam frame,
    • having multiple people in the webcam frame,
    • and others that are outlined specifically in the comprehensive documentation found on this page.
  • The remote computer proctoring system flags any testing videos in which there is possible dishonest activity and sends them to LTI for review. As such, AAPPL ratings are only released once each student's proctoring videos are cleared, no sooner than one week after testing.
  • In order to offer as much flexibility and accessibility as possible to our users, we have chosen a remote proctoring tool that works as a Google Chrome plugin. Google Chrome is a free web browser that can be used on most commonly-used systems, including Chromebooks, Mac laptops and desktops, and Windows laptops and desktops.
  • This Computer Proctoring Guide for Teachers is designed to help you prepare to launch computer proctoring.
  • And the Computer Proctoring Guide for Students and step-by-step video tutorial are here to support you and your students as well.

ALIRA Computer Proctoring

Out of School Testing for the OPI and WPT for the Seal of BiliteracyTM

The OPI and WPT for the Seal of BiliteracyTM is designed for 11th and 12th grade learners of 24 less commonly taught and tested languages whose goal is to attain the Seal of Biliteracy in one of those languages. The languages offered are Albanian, Amharic, Bangla, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Cantonese, Croatian, Dari, Gujarati, Haitian Creole, Hebrew, Hindi, Malayalam, Pashto, Polish, Swahili, Tagalog, Tamil, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, Urdu, Vietnamese, and Yoruba. For complete information about the test, please visit this page.

The OPI and WPT for the Seal of Biliteracy is available each year, with ordering beginning in December. Please review this FAQ for specific details about ordering and scheduling tests for this year’s testing season.

There are two components to this test, one to test speaking, and the other to test writing.

  • The Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) is a 30-minute speaking assessment conducted via a live phone call with an ACTFL-certified tester.
  • You will schedule the OPI portion with LTI for your students based on three preferred time slots that you will request at the time the test is ordered.
  • The Writing Proficiency Test (WPT) can be completed online or in booklet format for the same price. The structure of the test is the same in both instances, requiring students to respond in the target language to 4-5 prompts that are written in English.
    • The Internet-Based WPT is an up to 90-minute writing test (the duration depends on the language and keyboarding requirements).
    • The Booklet WPT is an up to 60-minute writing assessment that is handwritten in a booklet that test proctors will download, print, scan, and return to LTI for rating. If you wish to order the booklet version of the WPT, please contact LTI to have your account configured for this option.

The OPI and WPT for the Seal of Biliteracy is available for In-School and Out-of-School administration with multiple proctoring options for the WPT. Please note that the OPI is handled in the same way, as a scheduled live phone interview, regardless of the proctoring option chosen.

For In-School testing, you may choose between the Internet-Based and Booklet WPT. This document explains the In-School testing options.

For Out-of-School testing, either the Internet-Based or Booklet WPT may be administered by a Parent/Guardian proctor. This document explains the Out-of-School testing options.

Please review these documents designed to support parent/guardian proctors while testing.

The Internet-Based WPT is also available with Computer Proctoring for an additional $5 per student (for AAPPL users - if you are not an AAPPL user please contact us for pricing information). Step-by-step instructions for the Computer Proctoring process for students can be found in the Student Guide to Computer Proctoring for the OPI and WPT for the Seal of BiliteracyTM .
