Step Inside an Interior Designer’s Experimental Modern Glam Home

When designer John McClain starts noticing a material or feature show up too frequently in homes, he knows it’s time to try something different. So he made his new Los Angeles home a laboratory of sorts to test out new design ideas and looks.

He used porcelain slabs, a relatively new product, for his countertops, backsplash and fireplace covering. He also designed a stylish take on a waterfall-edge countertop and created a lot of his own furniture, including a modular coffee table, in addition to buying pieces on Houzz. See how his experiments came together to form a fun and glamorous modern home, then check out a curated collection of Houzz products McClain selected so you can create a similar look.

Good choice for surfaces. Porcelain slabs have durability, very easy to clean and less porous than natural stone or engineered stone. Good to repel bacteria.

Designer creativity abounds, especially those kitchen ceiling lights and waterfall effect of the countertop material with the bronze accents. That fireplace wall with the water vapor is incredible. Modern & glamorous, and this 70 year old grandma loves it, too!

Great job and refreshing take on how to incorporate color! Wondering, those fabulous turned legs in bathroom…where are they from?

Can you tell me what the cream wall paper in the husband's office is? Love it!

Phenomenal! Curious what was used for hood vent cover? I know a very subdued detail amongst all the grand elements, but I have been in search of something sleek, simple like you used for the hood vent. Thank you for any insight.

I was steered away from large porcelain slab due to installation challenges.

Love the waterfall slap in the kitchen. That is exactly what needs to be done to them, to break them up a bit and to draw the eye with the triangle. The fireplace is great too. How creative.

Loved your design, the layering of textures with care and purpose. The room was warm, looked comfortable, but stylish. Also loved your twist on the waterfall counter top, love the look of the porcelain slab, it is stunning, I would love to know how is it to keep clean and if there is any long term polishing etc.?. Also appreciated the mix of brass, and black metals throughout the house as well as the bath, brilliant . Thank you for sharing!!

The porcelain slabs are a great idea! We will use that in our bathrooms and kitchen.

Very nicely done. I like the colors, textures, and the fact he didn't go with the all white cabinetry so popular nowadays.

If I lived in Los Angeles (and had the money, lol), I would consider hiring Mr. McClain.

I loved his emphasis on working from your own heart. Most of us live in our houses. They are not just show places. I believe that a house is more comfortable when it reflects you and your family.
