Timothy Todd Baldwin, 64, sadly passed away on October 10.

He was born May 9, 1958, in Quincy, Michigan, the middle child of Peter and Nancy Jane Baldwin. Raised in a small town in southern Michigan close to the Indiana border, he was the son of a veterinarian and worked in the animal clinic. He soon discovered his love of animals was outweighed by his interest in the business aspect of running the clinic.

His interest in business led him to an eleven-year academic career at Michigan State University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Marketing, a Master of Business Administration, and a Ph.D. in Management. Tim loved the camaraderie of dorm living and made many, life-long friends on the “Abreast” floor of Abbot Hall where he was known by many of his friends as “Doc” (a nickname bestowed on him by his high school classmates). It was during this time that he met his college sweetheart, JoEllen (Hastings), on a dorm sponsored hayride. They married in 1986 and moved to Bloomington, Indiana where Tim accepted his first and only teaching position at Indiana University. They welcomed their son, Matthew, into their family in 1992. Tim was soon promoted to full professor and served as the Randall L. Tobias Chair in Leadership in the Department of Management and Entrepreneurship where he taught for over 35 years. He chaired the department from 2014 to 2020.

Tim embodied a spirit of excellence in research, teaching, and service. He published more than 50 academic journal articles, co-authored several books and won several competitive national and international research awards over his academic career. As a teacher he had a profound impact on students with his encouragement and support. He was frequently recognized for teaching excellence winning multiple University and School level MBA and undergraduate teaching awards. He consulted with companies such as Cummins Engine, Eli Lilly, FedEx, Ingersoll Rand, and Whirlpool. Tim was a faculty sponsor for IU Athletics and loved to represent the Kelley School of Business with prospective athlete students.

As a small-town boy, Tim felt completely at home in Bloomington. Tim and JoEllen joined the First Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder, chaired several committees and sponsored many of the youth of the church. He served the community in a variety of ways, most recently as a board member of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Bloomington. His love of sports, which stemmed from countless hours of play with his brothers, led to years of playing football, basketball and baseball in high school, intramurals at Michigan State and community sports in Bloomington. His hobbies included gardening, fireworks, and magic. Tim loved a grand community display of fireworks whether officially sanctioned or not and hosted a Fourth of July show in his neighborhood each year. His magic career as the Great Timbini got its start in his teaching – always seeking ways to improve his pedagogy he used a trick in his class to highlight a point. As a showman, he organized magic shows for family, children of the Quincy Library and at parties he hosted in his home.

Tim relished family gatherings, tailgates, elaborate feasts, great stories and lively conversation. He was always game for the occasional wild adventure. He was the person whose spirit and positive nature uplifted everyone else. Tim’s warmth, kindness and positive energy are unforgettable.

Tim is survived by his wife, JoEllen; son Matthew of Fishers, Indiana; loyal canine, Tucker; stepmother, Marie (Chambers) Baldwin; brother and sister-in-law Scott and Sue Baldwin of Northville, Michigan; brother and sister-in-law Ty and Jana Baldwin of Culver, Indiana. He is also survived by seven nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Peter C. Baldwin and his mother, Nancy Jane Baldwin.

Visitation will be Friday, November 11 from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m. at The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard (3000 E. Third Street, Bloomington, IN 47401). A funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 12 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church (221 E. Sixth Street, Bloomington, IN 47408).
