The Administration Department is seeking an Social Media Content Producer Intern to work in the Communications Division of the City Manager’s Office. This is a fantastic opportunity for a current college student or recent graduate looking to gain valuable experience creating impactful social media content that engages, excites, and informs the Yorba Linda community.

The ideal candidate is an outgoing self-starter with the desire to assist with creating social media content (photography, graphics, videos, and copy) for the City’s social media accounts and other communications productions. A successful candidate possesses strong writing and organizational skills, knowledge of social media techniques and best practices, and a talent for storytelling.

The Internship Opportunity:  

The Social Media Producer Intern will assist in sharing local information with residents, employees, community partners, and the public. Using superb writing skills, creative storytelling, photography and videography basics, the Intern will generate compelling content, and share it through the City's website, social media platforms, e-newsletters, public access television, and other communication media.

In addition to being a great resume-builder, this paid internship opportunity will afford the incumbent with an inside look at the inner-workings of local government, while simultaneously learning about the various City departments and projects. The intern will also get to meet elected, staff, and community leaders. The intern will work directly with the City’s communication leadership, and will interact frequently with the City's management team, Mayor and City Council.  

City staff will work with the selected candidate to create a customized, flexible schedule (around classes, other work, etc.), which will typically be 20 hours over 4-5 days per week (may include evening or weekend events). Most work will be completed during office hours (7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.) with occasional night or weekend work. This part-time position may work up to 40 hours per week over the summer months; however, but may not work more than 1,000 hours in any given fiscal year (July – June).

Examples of Duties

  • Creates exciting written and visual content for the City's social media channels using photography, videography, and online graphic design software.
  • Monitors social media comments and questions, and tracks analytics.
  • Contributes to brainstorming/developing community engagement strategies, outreach plans, and marketing efforts.
  • Records and edits video to promote City programs, services, and events.
  • Assists with research, preparation, and writing of e-newsletter, website text and articles, news releases, and issue-specific talking points.
  • Proofreads and edits written content for grammatical and spelling accuracy.
  • Helps, plans, organizes, and promotes City events and programs.
  • As assigned, attends public meetings and special events to take photos/video and promote City public relations efforts.
  • Analyzes information and recommends strategies for promoting and encouraging social media followership and website visits.
  • Prepares letters, databases, spreadsheets, surveys, reports, and presentations.
  • Crafts engaging promotional materials to highlight City services, projects, or events; including preparation of graphics for brochures, flyers, social media posts, and public access television (Channel 3).
  • Interacts with City staff members and elected officials in a collaborative and customer service-oriented manner.
  • Assists with receiving visitors, telephone calls, and responds to resident inquiries or requests.
  • Maintains files related to civic affairs, including City's community calendar and central photo file.
  • Initiates communication with City employees and community partners to produce marketing and communication materials.
  • Assists in responding to a variety of public information related inquiries and requests.
  • Assist in the coordination, set up, and presentation during press-related events.
  • Participate in meetings, schedule and conduct presentations, assist with day-to-day administrative duties, and other related duties as assigned.
  • Conduct research, gather information, and draft content of agency events and activities.

 Knowledge of:

  • Fundamentals of photography, videography, and social media content creation.
  • Photography and videography editing software, desktop and cloud-based graphic design applications, and Microsoft Office suite.
  • Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
  • Effective business communications and correct English usage, including spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Research techniques, methods, and procedures and report presentation; internet web site practices, methods and techniques; basic principles and practices of report preparation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must be currently enrolled in an accredited college/university majoring in public relations, political science, marketing, communications, journalism, visual arts/design, videography, photography, graphic art/design, or related fields. Recent graduates who completed their degree in one of the above fields of study are also eligible to apply.

 

LICENSES & OTHER REQUIREMENTS 

A valid Class C California Driver's License and the ability to maintain insurability under the City's Vehicle Insurance Policy.  

 

EXEMPT/NON-EXEMPT

This is a non-exempt position.  Overtime at the rate of one and one half times the hourly rate of the classification is paid for hours worked in excess of 40 hours per week.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work is performed in an office environment utilizing modern office equipment and technology and may require sitting for prolonged periods of time using a computer. The incumbent stands, walks, and may twist, reach, bend, crouch and kneel.  An incumbent must be able to meet the requirements of the classification and have mobility, vision, hearing and dexterity levels appropriate to the duties to be performed.  This position has exposure to vibrations from a computer and other office equipment; computer glare.

 

BACKGROUND CHECK/PHYSICAL EXAM  

Individuals selected for employment will be required to take and pass a background check (fingerprinting) for all positions and medical exam for full time and permanent part time positions.  The background check and medical examination are at City expense; and conducted by a law enforcement agency and physician designated by the City.  Candidates who are currently working are urged not to resign until they have successfully passed the background check, physical examination and received a final offer letter.

DISASTER SERVICE WORKER  

In accordance with Government Code Section 3100, City of Yorba Linda Employees, in the event of a disaster, are considered disaster service workers and may be asked to respond accordingly. 

The City does not participate in Social Security, but rather provides an alternative retirement benefit in accordance with Internal Revenue Service regulations. Each part-time employee will automatically be enrolled in an individual MIssionSquare Retirement deferred compensation (retirement) account in which an employee must contribute 3.75% of their gross earnings and the City will contribute an additional 3.75% on behalf of the employee. Part-time employees must also contribute 1.45% of their gross earnings for Medicare coverage. No health or vacation leave benefits are provided to temporary part-time positions. Sick leave is accrued in accordance with the Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Family Act of 2014.
